oh they are so definitely aberrations! I can't speak much for the science of genetics, knowing sweet b*gger all about to be able to discourse coherently, but I can discuss with some knowledge regarding the role and symbolism of the chimaera in mythology.
Chimaerae (including the specific legendary Chimaera defeated by Bellerophon) being monstrous creatures made up of the parts of different animals, represent demonic forces, or at least those of the underworld. This is because they are usually the offspring of improper matches, lacking the ideal form(s) so beloved of classical mythology. In other words, if it doesn't look right, it isn't. Being un-natural, they were associated with all sorts of destructive and catastrophic events, shipwrecks, storms, volcanoes and earthquakes. These associations were carried on beyond antiquity into the Medieval and Renaissance iconographies, where for example Danté clearly places them in his
Inferno as minions of Hell.
I'm not sure though that a hare/horse hybrid could class a minion of Hell, more just a sort of sad rabbit thing...
