Ah the wonders of highschool...wilde, DSQrn maybe you should start a thread about Robin & kie
LXP...its fine if you call me that yes. OK, I alreaady forgot most of what I read, so lets see what I can say.
Bret...I've met people who "cares" for others, but for a big part, its only for show, only that other people will think better of them. I know there are some people out there who really care, I just havent met all that many of them. I'm just in the habit of making generalizations.
As for how I see myself. I'll do almost anything to help out my friends....I'll go pretty far to help people I know...sometimes even people I dont know.
Hmm lets take for example a tramp or someone homeless...That is a difficult one, I never ever give money. If they ask for food, from time to time I will give. I'm still battling ith if it is a good idea to give food to the homeless or not(hmm another thing to start a thread about) It breaks my heart to see people having to sleep on streets or to think about how bad it must be in winter.Question is what can you do about it.
Are there times when I walk past people I could have helped? Yes.
hmm I cant remember what else I wanted to say. I'll be back later and think again

DSQrn seem to make great friends with LXP
i've given up trying to bring myself up to speed on this. but sw, i think you might want a change of crowd or something. selfishness is the goal in the long run for most. repeat, most . but those that can afford it, and those that are brought up right will help those in dire need.
imho there's just too many spoilt pricks these days. that, i think, is how you got your idea of most being selfish.

sw; thanks for taking up the gauntlette. i thought you would let that one die.
if you think people do not care for others what gives you the sole market share on peace and love. surely you must realise that there are a vast amounts of people who would describe themselves as you do in the quote above. just because they do not make the headlines it does not lessen the good will of millions of people around the world.

My 2cents worth. On the whole, most people Don't care. They say they do and some make a half hearted attemt to show it, but when it comes right down to it, crunch time, they back off. Careing for people, ie strangers, means giving them food when needed, cloths when needed, comfort when needed, shelter when needed, visiting when ill or in jail. Careing for someone, especially when they can't return the favor. That is what it means when you say you care about people. Yes, you may not have the opertunity to do all these things, but some variations are always available.
There are those that you can pass. Those that hold up signs that say they will work for food, but when you offer them a paid for meal, they ask for money instead. Thier need is the wrong kind, ie drugs, or fraud. If the person truly needs the food, they will except it or the work to earn a leaving because they still have selfrespect.

hello mr. tawakalna. nice to see you here without the mask. i suppose you must have snook in while the guards were nappin' or busy stoning someone who said "jehovah", either way...HI!.
akshly somebody stole me "dru", now they call me mister "id". fyi (i hate tla's) someone kidnapped me first syllable the little blighter and ever since i have become more introspective. funny how the little things go unnoticed.
sw;
@sw; so are you saying that you were really only making a silly generalisation because you "like" doing that or do really believe what you said? your statement quoted above seems to hold both to be true.
@finalday; perhaps the reason we do not help those who carry such signs is because we expect them to milk our kndness and ask for money.
would you help a blind person cross the street?
would you help pick an elderly person up if they slipped in front of you on the street?
would you help a lost child in a store find it's parents?
would you give up your seat on a train or bus for someone who obviously needs it more?
if the person in front of you dropped their wallet in a que without noticing would you pick it up an return it?
don't say yes but others would not so the world is a rotten stinking place, the bold boys in school beat me up, my dad thinks i am a waster, the girl next door thinks i'm spotty, i wish i had the money to be an alchoholic but i can't even afford ginger beer so i hate everyone and nobody cares, would you, nobody else...would you? do you think that you are one of the oh so "horrid" people? would you?

sw;
I just like generalizing And then I havent met all that many people who do really care.

You forget this is not just about homeless people or bllind people etc, it is about problem in general, any kind of problems...people simply dont care for others, weather they are wealthy, homeless or just normal...other people's feelings and normal everyday struggles just doesnt matter to anyone.(or most then if i'm not to generalise)
thanks sw, that's more like it. if you are going to make the statement you believe in, especially if others will disagree, be prepared to defend it. you cannot go through life being on good terms with all because some will simply have beliefs which are contrary to yours which you will not be able to resolve. if you can defend your beliefs i might not like you but i will respect you. if you sit on the fence i'll knock it down.
personlally i think most people would like to be kind and sharing and are when it does not mean a risk to their own person. if i see a begger i'd help but my experience of doing so is that they will, as FD points out, throw my kindness in my face and hurt me in a very odd way...you are made feel like a niieve fool. i would be more chritable but again experience says it rarely gets to those who need it. the real test is not "do you help" in the "save the world" way but rather do you ever intentionally hurt and when confronted by the one on one examples i posed as questions where there is no personal risk do you help?
we have a natural tenency to self protect so we do not help others as much as we would like for fear of opening ourselves up to hurt. however the majority of people do not wish harm on others nor do thay actively seek to inflict harm. they will also help where they think it will make a difference without it being thrown back in their faces, like saving a baby from a burning house or helping a child find it's parents.
are these not signs of good will or do you think that our forum members would answer "No" to my questions?

Actually I'm trying to go through life having everyone hate me
I think I might have stated what this is about a bit wrong, while it is also about all you are adressing, I was thinking amore personal level as well...most of the things you guys are talking about is impersonal, about people caring for people you dont know, but what do you think about my statement in regard to more personal matters...eg co-workers, friends family. I stand by my statement(generalization) in this as well

amazing how a missing "e" can change the meaning of a statement.
when you say more personal how close do you mean. those i work for are often as annonymous as those begging on the streets. how personal?
i do not help those i do not know f or fer of being hurt or misled. for those i do know, those i trust, my friends and family, i will give my life for them no question and i am sure everyone here would ay the same. money is no object, if i have it i'll give it if they need. time, distance...i'll give it, i'm there. the last post i made explains why i do little for those i do not know, none of that could excuse not being there for those i care for.
the original post you made implied that you held a belief that no one cares for others any more. understandable if you think of it on an impersonal level but i reckon you will get few takers if you are talking on a personal friends and family level.

I would see it that if the population cared for at leaset 75% of the needy and homeless, there would be a whole lot less living on the street, and our additudes in general would be different. As in not hateing each other. But, the unwullingness to help peoplee stems from selfishness. If we each helped one person, a lot of poverty would be eliminated, though I do not see that happening in this world. Only in very small tightnit comunities.
