Thanks people, it feels good to have "evolved" to broadband . FL MP here I come! (Eventually)

poor old Esq, you do get sum stick, don't you!
It's true, I'm TLR's whipping boy; it's the burden I bear . Actually, I would *really* like to know why that is. It's been happening all my life. Must be my native eccentricities shining through or something .

Indy - As for ginger ale vs. ginger beer, you get full marks. Bravo! Except for your baseless accusations about the alcohol content of the beverage in question. There's a link to the good stuff here. In any case, I bet I could drink you and Taw under the table in a ginger beer drinking contest!

AoD - I mentioned the details of my chosen plan on the previous page.

sw - Thanks for the gb, it's always welcome .

I had two choices, create a new thread or gravedig. I chose gravedig (as this thread is only just less than a month old).

Still debateing on DSL. I hate giving up a service I have had since 98. They have always had great service, multi numbers to dial into, and good price, $14.95 a month. Bell south is offering lite dsl for $9.95 a month for 6 onths then ups to $24.99 a month fro rest of the year.

The fact that you don't have to incur dial-up costs everytime you connect to your ISP will save you money in the long run Final. Depending upon how often you ring up of course .

Post Sun Nov 14, 2004 7:59 pm

Yup Eskie is right, I'm actually paying less now (minus phone bill) for my unlimited cable than I was for unlimited dial-up.

Post Sun Nov 14, 2004 8:08 pm

There is no per call dial up charges, no long distance either with Juno. Unlimited time, just slower speed.

Post Mon Nov 15, 2004 1:22 am

Eh? How can you not be charged a nominal fee every time you connect to the internet? Do you get free phone calls or something? To my knowledge, EVERY telephone company that offers landlines charges you for every local (and international) call you make. Here in Aus. it is 22 cents per local call.

Ah, how things are the same and yet different from to place to place.

Fd's dail-up cost is the price of a local phone call chargeable to him by his
phone service which is not the ISP. Juno, the ISP then just charges for his
internet gateway.

Fd. DSL service is worthwhile to you if you see yourself on the net downloading
and what have you every night of the week. The net cost to you probably is a few dollars more than your analog dial up but I hazard to say not as much as you may think if you consider the local calls you are making each time you dial up.

The other thought is that, with DSL, you may consider using internet long distance rather than normal phone service long distance in which case you may
end up saving money by discontinuing your long distance service contract which
may cost more that internet long distance.

Remember also that you can't get ADSL if you are too far away from the local exchange. Luckily, I'm only two blocks away .

Post Mon Nov 15, 2004 3:14 pm

Last I heard the US phone companies will put in a repeater to boost the signal or upgrade the line if you are too far from the exchange. Unfortunately we get far from the same service, I was denied DSL for being to far from the exchange. Thankfully that wonderfull piece of insulated copper is running down my street.

For clarification, my local phone bill, reguardles wether I'm on the internet or not, is $32 a month. Unlimited local calls, IE, with in a 400 mile diamiter range. I do not call long distance. Juno is 14.95 and is unlimited hours, uploads or downloads. So, I could in theiory stay on the net 24 hours and no additional charges, or make 20 connetions a day with no additinal charges. If I get DSL, I will still have to get my phone line in addition to the DSL. so, the cost is the same for 1st 6 months and a little higher the last 6 months. But, I lose Juno altogeather then, as I don't won't to pay for 2 services. Yes, juno has a web version, but the same cost as the dial up one.
