Firmware is the programming in the hardware itself, put there by the manufacturer.
Here is a site that carries a lot of patches and flashes for that firmware ... I've never tried this so don't know much about it.
They seem legit
The flash for the NEC 2100A makes it CD-RW capable and fools your PC into thinking that it is a NEC 2500A. This might also do away with your current problem.
This assumes that the 2100A and the 2100AD are the same.

Here's something that indicates that a 2100AD user successfully flashed his unit to make it
CD-RW capable .
