Dogs Can Detect Whether You Have Bladder Cancer

OK. Not the most glamorous of cancers but a dog can tell whether you have bladder cancer or not.

Better that it is a dog and not a human, I say

Results Taken as a group, the dogs correctly selected urine from patients with bladder cancer on 22 out of 54 occasions. This gave a mean success rate of 41% (95% confidence intervals 23% to 58% under assumptions of normality, 26% to 52% using bootstrap methods), compared with 14% expected by chance alone. Multivariate analysis suggested that the dogs' capacity to recognise a characteristic bladder cancer odour was independent of other chemical aspects of the urine detectable by urinalysis.

What's so hard to accept? If it is a urinalysis in the end there is a good chance that a dog's olfactory nerves can detect chemical differences in it anyway.

nah its true, they are already being used for detecting skin cancer, many documented cases of the pooch being right.

i don't want a mutt sniffing my privates thank you very much *shakes head* disgusting

Post Tue Sep 28, 2004 12:35 pm

Whoa!

No, they sniff the specimen given, NOT the person. My god, Taw, get a grip!

don't even go there thats foul, even it sniffing ur urine is still a fairly sick thought even though they sniff each others urine

oh yeh right I feel so much better giving my p*ss to a hound to taste to tell me if I'm ill or not. Why not just stuff a load of leeches down my pants? honestly, this is quack medicine gone insane; how the hell are we supposed to know if the mutt is having an off day or not, or he's barking cos he's hungry. what a load of old Spillers shapes, hmmm what's this man's diagnosis, Nurse, well doctor the dog wagged his tail and barked twice, ah terminal heh? what a shame...

still, i must confess i have been feeling a little woof!

you're not telling me you believe this chicanery, are you, Ed? what next? cupping? bleeding? ducking? giving dogs p*ss to sniff is, well, almost medieval! and you said they only got 22 out 54 right, right? well that's a crap statistic - were i to subject myself to this Ind ignity , i'll have a less than 50% chance of getting a believable result? that's pooh (they don't sniff that too, do they?)

hell, what would they make off FF's samples considering all the boiled raccoon pooh he drinks?

im starting to think now that some things sound riduculous but may end up as a solution that works, including this

As sick as this sounds, if 54 people, 27 of which had bladder cancer the other 27 didn't, if i was to smell each of their Urine, i would get, probability speaking, half of the half right. And i wouldn't have a clue! Rounding up thats 14 people. Therefore, i'm almost as good as the dog.

Or i really am bad at maths and this makes no sense at all, but meh

If the dog had got 90% + correct, then maybe they are on to something. Dogs can smell a lot of things, as well as sense, but i doubt this, especially as it is under 50%

They've got dogs sniffing for drugs, explosives, you name it. I certainly would not take the canine sniff test as the dispositive means of determining whether I had bladder cancer but... you know what? If the dog reacted with a positive for the test, I'd take it as a good indication that more medical attention is needed.

It certainly would be a cheaper way to conduct a preliminary screening.

Do I see a canine sniffer in my future? Don't know. You're saying it is not reliable.
I'm saying that it probably is no less reliable than some of the labs that crunch away generating volume to make a buck. They get things wrong as it is. At least a mutt can't have greed as a motive to be sloppy.

Dammit bret - was about to say the same thing

So how many did the dogs identify who didn't have cancer as having cancer?
If its 0 then its not bad - a 50% detection rate

If its anything over that then its chance

Post Tue Sep 28, 2004 5:43 pm

Like I said, they have dogs to detect hidden explosives including plastiques . People already stake their lives on the functional effectiveness of canine olfactories.

They are not "diagnosing" after all. They're just sniffing out a scent.
