internet probs

I keep having problems with my line. I got a Verizon DSL, 10mbps line. Before my downloads were in high 70s and 80s kbps, now they drop to 30-50 kbps range for no particluar reason. At first I thought it might be site I am downloading from, so I got to sites i downloaded from before...and still the slow downlaod.

Anybody know what could be the problem??

I tested the speeds, they seem normal, cleaned all junk files, all left to do is difragment my c drive. Also upload speeds are VERY slow, around 16kbps almost all the time :/. still the problem though...

my system info, ALL of it this time

I think it depends alot on the site you are using just like you said...chances are its not your computer that is causing the problem. If it was me I would get on the phone and call Verizon (yes I know tech support is a pain).

Post Fri Sep 24, 2004 8:41 pm

I think I will have to call them lol, every single download today (and i did many, just to test the speed) was at 50> kbps. Tested my download speed on pcpitstop.com and it says 303kbps...weird. I keep uploading at 16kbps, pcpitstop says 150kbps upload

EDIT
Tested download speed couple more times, got results over 600kbps and even 720. tried downloading...average speed 51kbps :/

Can I safely assume that you have scanned for worms/trojans/spyware, etc?

Oh, and are you still using IE? Because if you are... *raises fist* .

is anything else using your bandwith, like RDP/RA, auto-updates, error-reporting? are you running a p2p file-sharing programme like Kazaa or eMule, which can seriously hamper you b'width cos your uploading to remote users as well. do you use ICS or a network, because other users will also hammer your b'width.

you might also want to check the contention ratio of your DSL with your ISP.

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 11:57 am

ya I run autoupdates, for both NAV and windows (I got them enabled if thats what u eman)...also I got eMule, but I close it when ever I download from internet. And I am only one on my network...

anyway, downlaoded firefox and it seems to fix the prob, I am downloading at 90kbps now...its faster than before the problem

also, while testing on pcpitstop I saw they sell PC optimizer, it can speed up the internet by 200%, and I am sure as heck that my connection is slower than it should be..so is it worth it $30 to buy the optimizer, or are there any good free ones out there?

and I dont no how u check the ratio...so cant do that

I don't know about this PC Optimizer thing, if there was something that could speed up the internet that much everyone would have it. Do you know what it does exactly?

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 12:33 pm

here is some info...

Optimizer

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 1:31 pm

nooooooooo! all those internet optimisers are rubbish, don't waste your money. they're just cache (and cash, if you get the pun) monsters that do loads of unnecessary prefetching. if you want a fast browser the spend you're money on Opera, it's very quick and has a built-in download manager. Use Mozilla for security and stability.

r-click on your system applet and go to properties and disable RDP/RA, error reporting, and automatic updates (you should be doing them manually and religiously once a week at least) then when you've restarted go to your browser options, even if it's only InterKlunkXplorer and set yourself a cache of at least 2000mb. also don't cache all file types! that really slows browsing down, which is a bit perverse of you think about it.

there's a lot of other things you can look at but let's keep things simple, just try those for now.

Emule/Edonkey/Overnet still run from your tray - ie, even closing them means they are still connected and running away happily. You need to go to the tray icon, right click and close to stop it actually working.

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 7:32 pm

Taw, here is waht I did. I tihnk its what u explained no?

I went to Control Panel, and opened and double klicked on System and under Automatic Update, I dissabeled it.

If thats not it, plz tell the location of tthe system applet

Chips...heh never thought of it like taht

Ive abandoned trying to close stubbron programs the normal way now, if it dosent close, i kill the process.

As for the bandwidth problem, you could just have alot of people on your line using up the -width. Is the line dedicated full-soeed to you or is the total bandwidth shared?

@all: i still use IE. I dont really have a choice, if i put a new browser on this computer ill need to teach everyone else in this house how to use it. and on my notebook i need it or the school's Internet Gateway blocks access

Post Sun Sep 26, 2004 12:56 am

SP2 seems to have really plugged some vulnerabilities right up - which means IE isn't as bad as it used to be..........but try mozilla - its great
