@ Tawakalna. In South Africa it is a Matric Farewell. It's a custom at school that the St9's or Gr11's, as they are now known, says goodbye to the Matrics, usually just before the final exams. They then organize a big farewell dinner. Something special for the matrics. Coupled to this is a theme. That is supposed to be a surprise for the matrics.
The whole thing is then organized by the st9's. They also collect the money themselves for this occasion. The matrics is then invited to this occasion. Unfortunately these days it became more of a "whose wearing the best, most expensive, most outrages" dress type of thing.
This is a pity for that is now loosing the real thing... the "goodbye and best wishes for what lies ahead in the adult world". As we all know. It is a big step from school to university or work. Now you have more responsibility. So that is what this farewell is basically for

. Usually nothing official - the fancy dressing etc. is reserved for graduation. Then there's an official ceremony with teachers, principals, parents etc. followed by afterparties. I never really understood that prom thing - I guess traditions differ in different countries.
