@ Tawakalna. In South Africa it is a Matric Farewell. It's a custom at school that the St9's or Gr11's, as they are now known, says goodbye to the Matrics, usually just before the final exams. They then organize a big farewell dinner. Something special for the matrics. Coupled to this is a theme. That is supposed to be a surprise for the matrics.

The whole thing is then organized by the st9's. They also collect the money themselves for this occasion. The matrics is then invited to this occasion. Unfortunately these days it became more of a "whose wearing the best, most expensive, most outrages" dress type of thing.

This is a pity for that is now loosing the real thing... the "goodbye and best wishes for what lies ahead in the adult world". As we all know. It is a big step from school to university or work. Now you have more responsibility. So that is what this farewell is basically for

Bah! We didn't have no "proms" in my day! We had barn-dances and apple-bobbing .

Actually, we had "formals" back in the old days. Meh, they were a waste of time (and money) *shakes head*.

we never had anything so bizarre at our corner of the world. school was culminated with alot of fire alarms being tripped and bunking off every lesson to get to the pub.

i long for sophistication. Plus the "getting laid at afterparties" sounds alot more appealing.

As I remember from my young years, we got sth like a "100 days to graduation" events involving camping and heavy drinking + afterparties, 'cause it's never enough . Usually nothing official - the fancy dressing etc. is reserved for graduation. Then there's an official ceremony with teachers, principals, parents etc. followed by afterparties. I never really understood that prom thing - I guess traditions differ in different countries.

alot of fire alarms being tripped

We definatley had that down my way too. The alarm was tripped three times in one day as we broke up on study leave, then at the end of the day we went down to the local rec, got totally tanked, passed out on the rec hill and wondered home very very early in the morning.

Then the May Ball, which i opted out of because my date for the evening said yes then changed her mind when i turned up out side her friends house, with her and two others there hamered out of my face with two mates of mine who had come over to watch the first Hollyfield vs Tyson fight a few years back. I decided it would be a great idea to stand on her front garden, pull down my trousers and moonie them for about 5 minutes at half 11 at night.

Didn't go down to well. Anyway i ennded up losing my date for my immaturaty and went and got tanked down the loacl rec again

I remember entrails and pig's heads being strategically placed around the school yard prior to the school formal... or was that the last day of my secondary schooling?

Doesn't that happen everyday with the Victorian education system?

@sw, No limo? How did you get around?

@Rocketman, Not everyone gets laid at prom. I didn't, neither did most of my friends. But it is the after prom that makes it or break it.

I believe the car just happens to be a Ford Sierra or Orion by the looks of the picture.
