This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

so tell me, why is "prom" so important? it sounds very American, and it's clearly important to you seeing as you've been banging on about it for months. We don't have them, it's def something for foreigners

All we know about proms in Britain is

it's a posh music festival at the Royal Albert Hall
it's a seaside esplanade
it's short for promotion(s)
every American teen programme involoves a "senior"prom and dating somehow. by the obsession with proms on US telly, there must a prom almost every week, or perhaps they're all held on the same night every year and it's as important as July 4th or Thanksgiving (never did really figure what that one was all about?)
it's an anagram of romps.

now it's over, do you feel like you've gone through some rite of passage or something?

back in my day, drone drone, we had sixth-form leavers discos which i suppose were as close to foreign-type proms as 'twas ever going to get, but significantly less organised and hardly the object of such intense analysis and attention. I didn't go; when my contemporaries (they weren't friends) were making @sses of themselves on semi-alcoholic punch, I was square-bashing in Portsmouth. When they were cooing over their exam results a few months later, I was on a frigate in the Denmark Strait doing rf intercepts. While they were poncing about applying to universities I was being chucked about by mountainous waves in black freezing seas.

Such superficialities as "proms" and "discos" never appealed to me, i was always a lot more serious minded

Well, actually we dont call it prom, I only used prom, because then I wouldnt have to explain what it is.
Over here, it is a formal function you have in final year of school, a closing to your school career.
Well, it is semi important, since its the most formal function in the school career(of school functions that is)
Everyone tries to look pretty and the girls try to be one skinnier than the other. Then everyone wants to arrive in fancy cars.
manny people spen many thousands of bucks on dresses etc, which is totally stupid
It won't making you a better person if you go, but its a fun function, a good way of closing you school career.
Depending on who you are it will or wont be a very important function to you.
Anything else you want to know?
Oh yea, it basically consist of speeches, eating and dancing, no alcohol allowed. Then everyone is off to afterparties, or most of everyone

Post Sat Sep 25, 2004 11:28 am

Oh sorry, I answered indirectly.
It depends on the person you are, for ome its trying too look prettier than others, for others showint how much money they have to throw around, some others the time spent with friends, for some go with the flow.
Me? Despite talking about it a lot, its not that important to me, I was excited about it yea, but it wasn't really that important. When I knew what the fabric for my dress looked like I was just more excited, because it would be something different.
Satisfied?

What do you mean more insightful? I'm not sure i know what you really want to know

Proms aren't really important per say, its just a fun social event. At my school everyone from Freshman to Seniors are allowed to go because its small. I guess you could say its important because its the last big social event besides graduation for Seniors before they go to college. SW where do you live that you had a prom this time of year?

I'm sw not SW
I live in South Africa, our school year starts in middle Januarey and ends beginning December

Proms are big in the US because the kids are all in a hurry to act like grown ups so getting all dressed up in tuxedos and ball gowns is supposed to be very adult and, yet, totally protected 'cause they're all kids. Go in a limousine to a big dance/fete, etc.

Once a year. Usually end of grade term. Often have Junior Proms too now. It is getting out of hand, I'd say.

This was my second prom, went with a friend to his 2 years ago, I have to say, 2 are more than enough, its just not worth the hassle

sry for the "SW" I'll try to remember that :p, I usually consider all school dances to be hassles its usually more fun to just go hang out with my friends...lol my opinion usually isn't very popular tho.
