1st September 1939, Germany invades Poland on a trumped -up pretext (grom's Mrs' family are Polish)
3rd September 1939, Britain and France declare war on Germany in accordance with their guarantees of Polish sovereignty (which didn't amount to much)

well as to anything else, erm, it's 23 years since I lost my virginity, but not my birthday, erm not joining TLR, not kid's birthdays, not wedding anniversary <shudder> ok I give up. what else is it then?

is it likely that your mum will wreak merciless vengeance upon you for not doing anything for her b'day? are you getting her something instead? whatever you get her she will say she likes (mums do that) and the very act of getting something and giving it to there means you will be automatically obviated from needing to "do" anything else. however, the tolerance shown us (males) by our mothers is highly misleading; wait till you get married, then try forgetting your spouses b'day, or not "doing" anything.

I think I know what Kimk means,

Tomorrow, or today, as relativety plays his cards, is the 15th of september, which marks the start of operation "Market Garden" (15th of september 1944) "Market" for aerial forces, "Garden" for ground forces, this operation I think partially due to Monty not using his Full Monty, was a spectacular disaster. The plan was to make a straight march to arnhem, and let the forces be recuperated and such there (also resupplied and so) The plan however went over board, as soon as they found out that they were facing an SS Panzer division in Arnhem, and the allied forces were outgunned, and I believe outnumbered by that division, stationed at Arnhem. with that Monty went a tad too far, hence the name of the Battle, The "Battle for Arnhem" or "A bridge too far"

This however is my knowledge of this matter. I should read up on it, but in the mean time I think Komrad Taw can fill you in perfectly.

oh flip, i'd meant to remember this as well; yes it is Operation Market Garden. imagine forgetting that.

nicely praesied, Loc. One small point, the paratroops didn't just face an SS Panzer Div, they landed right on top of it! wadda mistaka to make.

an extra twist to the tragedy, misconcieved though the entire plane was from the start, was the refusal of good ol' Monty and his Staff accept reconaissance and resistance reports of major German forces in the Arnhem/Mijmegen area. Churchill had bent roosevelt's arm to make Eisenhower grant Monty a chance to pull off a specacular surprise victory, rather than giving the authority and resources to patto who'd already driven the Germans back to the Franco-German border (far better general) The Germans thought the same! they were convinced that Ike would put his weight behind Ol' Blood 'n' Guts in the central area of the front, so the elite SS Panzer divisions were sent to Holland for recuperation, it being a relatively quiet sector of the front. Monty's ego and the political and administrative momentum now in the plan resulted in it going ahead despite there being very major reasons to stop it.

one of the consequences of the debacle was that Holland was left alone largely by the Allies, and the Germans stayed in occupation until the end of the war, with all the ramifications that meant for the Dutch people.

sorry Dutchies we really let you down on that one

Yes, if the stupid British had just listened to us Americans, the war would have ended WAY earlier! But NO, Monty had to go on with his risky operation that failed, at the cost of thousands of lives. If we had let Patton push on through to Germany, the War would have ended very quickly. Because we didn't, we then had to deal with the Bulge, which cost the Allies even more lives.
(Sorry brits, but you guys were wrong about that. )
Ahh, the 'what ifs'.
