That makes sense. The tribal clan system is probably the oldest polity in mankind. And it works too well in impoverished or underdeveloped areas.

About the Shia, though, it makes Al Sadr a bit of an anomoaly doesn't it? He's Arab Shia, he is rather outspokenly anti-Iranian out of what appears to be an ethnic prejudice. Is there an "Arabian" Shia that is distinguishable from the Persian?

it's all very confusing isn't it? yes he's an arab, yes he's Shia, yes he's Iraqi. Not all of these things can be squared with each other.

the current unfortunate situation is full of these contradictions, which shift like the desert sands as the situation demands. Sadr's powerbase is the respect that Iraqi shia had for his dad, heightened by the son's defiance of the Americans. Iraqis don't like the Iranians (and vice versa) a hostility that goes back to pre-islamic times. but ther's no difference between "arabian"Shai and "persian" Shia as regards their interpretation of Islam, it's an ethnic thing. Also if Sadr's seen to be getting help off the Iranians, it makes him lose credibilty with the Resistance and with ordinary iraqis. And the Iranians are trying to keep hands-off Iraq as much as they can cos they dont want to be next on W's target list, and they don't wantt o coomit themselves as they don't really know what's going to happen, other than, as almost all observers now expect, an inevitable civil war once the Americans eventually pull out.
