Hmm... discrimination or female IDs are somehow easier to use? BTW, one guy I know went to the US and married to a lesbian woman (he paid her to do that) to be able to live there legally.

It is just a nuance thing which I happen to like to play with.

Because, usually, if one is single, one is not married ... or unmarried so to speak (because you've never been married... right .

In your case, however, you ARE single but you don't know if you still remain, legally, not married or unmarried.

So to wonder whether you were still unmarried is a very appropriate way to put it. You can't wonder if you're still single, so to speak, because you know you are.

Because marriage is not just a private thing, you actually have to get the government involved so your legal status as being married is outside of your exclusive control.

Marriage to a citizen is indeed one of the surer ways to obtain a right to stay in the US if you are not a citizen.

@Zlo - Not surprising at all . They even have situation comedy episodes about it although the one I remember had a gay male citizen marrying a woman who was twice his age and trying to convince the immigration official that it was "love."

Nowdays, though, they have really started to clamp down very hard on those kind of things ... because of, er, current conditions.

I bet that some of these "unsuspecting women" are selling or renting their identities. It can't all be innocent women being victimized by nasty foreign men. I also bet that it happens more prevalently in areas where there is a large migrant work force of say, mine laborers and the like. And probably also along major truck routes to and from SA.
