Close-ish. Consider the meaning of atheist or a-theist and you should be able to suss out what the root word is and means.

Perhaps an antitheist? A person who is against God but does not deny his existence?

Yeah, I was thinking antitheist as well. I guess it'll do.

Anti means against. Antitheist means one who is against a belief in god.

An atheist is one who has no belief in god.

A person with a belief in god is a theist.

If you are looking for a word about a person who, while not sure that there is a god
but is unwilling to say that there is not god, such a person is an agnostic.

anti = opposite/against

antitheist = against the belief that there is no god. (literally)

therefore, antitheist = someone who believes there is a god but doesn't believe in it.

ok i'll try put some sense into things now. things can exist, like winMe. but you dont necessarily believe in them. i seriously dont think anyone on the fourms believe in winMe's? but it does exist.

therefore, the god can exist but not be believed in by an antitheist.

i think thats the word, despite being made up.

Therefore: monotheist= Belief in one god

And Polytheist= Belief in many gods

It's only a religious discussion in the loosest sense of the word. There has been no mention of superiority or inferiority of certain beliefs, in fact there has been very little mention of actual religion. Generally this thread has dealt with a lack of religion. Really it's an etomological discussion if anything. And I would appreciate it if the mods didn't lock it "pre-emptively" as it seems to be quite harmless to me.


Anyway...I've messed about some more with my trusty thesaurus and dictionary and come up with "abenetheist" or maybe it should be "atheobenist" I can never get the mixing straight. But here's my logic anyway...

A theist believes in god
An atheist does not believe in god
"Bene" gomes from the Latin word meaning well or good
Combine the three properly and you have something that describes a person who does not believe in a good god; it's not 100% perfect but its the best I can do now.

One word that describes something similar to what you are looking for is :

apostate - which means "One who has abandoned one's religious faith"

similarly, there is also :

dissenter - which is someone who refuses to accept the doctrines of an established or national church

In many ways a "dissenter" is closer to what you were describing. Eg. If the national church (such as "the church of england" says "god is good" and teaches "god will always get you through your problems"...and you don't believe these things, but DO still believe there is a God, you would be a "dissenter".

And for the record, ff & co, this is NOT a religious discussion. This is a discussion about words and their meanings. It is possible to mention the word "god" in a sentence and it not be a religious discussion ya know?!! I don't understand why you have to spam a perfectly good thread?

Ok, On Topic, I would like a single word that describes someone one who takes a long time to wake up. Anyone?
