down with the kids

A British Government Agency has been charged with the unenviable task of identifying the different teenage groups/trends that are prominent in Britain today.

They have identified nine "tribes"...and they intend to use the new found information to teach foreign kids about Britain's youth culture. Quite a good idea really, but I imagine that the information is more likely to be exploited by over-enthusiastic, or piss-taking, parents. I can hear the arguments now...

"darling, do you have to be a goth? how about we go get you a nice tracksuit and you can be a townie? that would be much nicer!"

"aawwwww muuuummmm"

Here's the list of tribes anyway - I find it quite amusing that it really hasn't changed much since when I was at school. Maybe they're slightly more segregated than they used to be, but the styles are pretty much the same....its amusing that they think they're original (god I feel old saying that )

The nine tribes:

Townies:
Girls wear tight trousers, short skirts, chunky jewellery. Boys wear designer labels and tracksuits.

Goths:
Girls wear black clothes and black lipstick, and lots of hairspray. Boys are the same. They love being misunderstood and are said to hate daylight.

Nu-Metallers:
A boys-only group, they wear oversize rock band T-shirts, baggy three-quarter length trousers. They fool around with skateboards, but are not very good at it.

Soulstrels:
A girls-only tribe, they wear very short skirts or tight clothing, adorned with designer accessories and gold jewellery.

Indie Kids:
Both boys and girls are swathed in layers of second-hand 1970s clothing. No particular hair style, which is straight and floppy. Theirs is a cheap, just-got-out-of-bed casual style.

Pop Princesses:
A girls-only tribe that wears pink, silver and baby blue with lots of pop accessories. They are, like, so into Britney Spears, Will Young and Atomic Kitten.

Clubbers:
Boys wear Ben Sherman shirts, black shoes and a tubful of hair gel at a time, while the girls have a big thing for turquoise and/or white gear. Listen to Basement Jaxx and Faithless.

Grungers:
Dreadlocked with baggy combat trousers, battered Converse sneakers and "hoodies", which have to be just so loose. Boys too.

Skaters:
Boys and girls can be found sporting labels like Converse, Dickies and Silas. Easily identifiable by the skateboard but, unlike Nu-Metallers, can actually do serious tricks with them. They love PlayStation.

Where i live we only have the arrogant little sh*t head townies!

My parents are friends with a copper and beacuse my dad worked at a school he's often asked if he recognises any of them when he brings cctv videos showing them destroying peoples stuff. They are all the little dick heads that think their cool.

I also don't think its really the type of impression we want to give other countries either that the youth of today roam the streets of england in "tribes"

I know what you're saying bret - but unfortunately thats the truth. Would you prefer them to be seen by the world as "gangs"? I know I wouldn't...."Tribes" is a much more pascifistic term which applies to the majority, more than "gangs" would.

Know what I mean?

hmm, interesting how many of those *ahem* tribes are music centric although i think they fail to apreciate the sorts who just wander aimlessley through life belonging to neither or multiple groups. i have a "straight out of bed" look, im crap at skateboarding, i wear hoodies and baggy clothing and hate daylight....uh oh!
Plus i dunno about you but i'd hate to have my social orientation and belief summed up in about half a sentence.

Sure its easy to spot the sheep in the world, the ones who solely live up to the image, but there are real people who drift between these groups daily.

Don't want to start anything but ... are these tribes multi-ethnic/multi-racial?

Post Thu Aug 12, 2004 5:19 am

multi ethnic/race, although it seems that alot of ethnic groups seem to belong predominantly to a single *cough* tribe (i f**king hate that term, are you sure that's what theyre calling them?) like alot of blacks seem to belong to the dj oriented, urban culture 'tribes' etc.

thinking about it, does this list take into account homosexual social groups where everyone's dressing a little but upmarket with shirts and blazers. or the hippies who havent cut anything for years?

Post Thu Aug 12, 2004 7:42 am

I noticed a distinct lack of hippies as well...but I suppose thats the new skater "tribe"? I also know what you mean about the people that fall out of these categories, but I think the idea was to categorise the sheep - which unfortunately are the majority.

Interestingly though, I see adult versions of every one of these "tribes" every single day....insulting as it is, the unfortunate way of british life at the moment is that the majority of people do actually fall into one of about 10 categories.

As for the "tribe" issue, yes yes I know its a terrible word, but I didn't come up with it - here let me prove it...

tribes

tribes

and more bloody tribes

Thats pretty funny...expecialy since they spent money on it.

My only question is-
What's the point? Are these appointed tribes needed?
I don't seem to fit into any of them.

@Grom

Thats a good point. I do see what you mean.

@Shadow

Neither do i. I don't like following trend. I prefer to wear what i'm most comfortable in.

@indy

No. Not around my way anyway. Its all mixed.

All of it is surrounded by music orientation.

I wonder how many "tribes" there are here in the US.

Post Thu Aug 12, 2004 12:02 pm

american version of some of those 'tribes' could be quite funny.

The thing that I can never figure out is this: If everyone online is unique, myself included, (and I mean everyone, not just here but on every board, relating to every subject) where the hell are all of the tribesmen and tribeswomen?

That's because you are
I'm a fashion-like, trendy kind of guy. Nice shirt/good pants/perfect shoes, preferably a good brand (my brands are expensive baby) My hair has to be perfect .
What kind of tribe am I?

oy!

I believe Wiz, that would make you a townie or a clubber, depending on whether you like pop music or dance music. Of course if you are an indie or a rock man and you wear those sorts of clothes, then that would make you a computer salesman or consultant

Codename - I believe there is a 10th tribe blatantly missing from that list - "the nerd"
