down with the kids
A British Government Agency has been charged with the unenviable task of identifying the different teenage groups/trends that are prominent in Britain today.
They have identified nine "tribes"...and they intend to use the new found information to teach foreign kids about Britain's youth culture. Quite a good idea really, but I imagine that the information is more likely to be exploited by over-enthusiastic, or piss-taking, parents. I can hear the arguments now...
"darling, do you have to be a goth? how about we go get you a nice tracksuit and you can be a townie? that would be much nicer!"

Here's the list of tribes anyway - I find it quite amusing that it really hasn't changed much since when I was at school. Maybe they're slightly more segregated than they used to be, but the styles are pretty much the same....its amusing that they think they're original (god I feel old saying that
)
The nine tribes:
Townies:
Girls wear tight trousers, short skirts, chunky jewellery. Boys wear designer labels and tracksuits.
Goths:
Girls wear black clothes and black lipstick, and lots of hairspray. Boys are the same. They love being misunderstood and are said to hate daylight.
Nu-Metallers:
A boys-only group, they wear oversize rock band T-shirts, baggy three-quarter length trousers. They fool around with skateboards, but are not very good at it.
Soulstrels:
A girls-only tribe, they wear very short skirts or tight clothing, adorned with designer accessories and gold jewellery.
Indie Kids:
Both boys and girls are swathed in layers of second-hand 1970s clothing. No particular hair style, which is straight and floppy. Theirs is a cheap, just-got-out-of-bed casual style.
Pop Princesses:
A girls-only tribe that wears pink, silver and baby blue with lots of pop accessories. They are, like, so into Britney Spears, Will Young and Atomic Kitten.
Clubbers:
Boys wear Ben Sherman shirts, black shoes and a tubful of hair gel at a time, while the girls have a big thing for turquoise and/or white gear. Listen to Basement Jaxx and Faithless.
Grungers:
Dreadlocked with baggy combat trousers, battered Converse sneakers and "hoodies", which have to be just so loose. Boys too.
Skaters:
Boys and girls can be found sporting labels like Converse, Dickies and Silas. Easily identifiable by the skateboard but, unlike Nu-Metallers, can actually do serious tricks with them. They love PlayStation.
