Star Wars Galaxies

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

@Chips: I think it was Catacombs 3D that came before Wolfenstein 3D. It's just not as well known.
Anyhoo, back on topic: I don't play online games at all. Galaxies looks like crap to me and doesn't look like fun at all. I'm a Star Wars nut, and this game doesn't appeal to me. As for the PAY-TO-PLAY deal? F**k that! I'm not going to shell out more money for a game on which I've already paid full price. This is how I feel about ALL THE OTHER pay-to-play mmorpg's out there.

I remember Catacombs. That was the one in which you threw fireballs, right?

@Esky: Yep, that's the one. Fun as hell, too.

Reports on what was shown at E3 for this game appear to be encouraging. There's some nice game play involving x-wings vs. tie fighters and stuff which apparently sets this game up for special mention or something.

Huh? Oh. I was on b'ness trip and ACTUALLY shelled out the $8.99 for the latest CGW issue AND a DVD loaded with demos that I cannot use atm

I raise Taw's snap judgment with my occasinal gaming mag reader's otherwise uninformed blind reference.

well for those that get into this type, the Superheros of the city or such name is doing a 30 day free deal. I'll stick to KOTOR for now.

I guess wiz is loving his 14 day trial since he hasn't posted back his first impressions/thoughts on it yet

@Fd

City of Heros. $15/mo. Not allowed to use any "real" super hero's / heroine's name. While male heros look to be of two physio types, gigantic overmuscled tank or trim ... female heroines all seem to have ONLY the front porch selection.

Who would pay $15/mo just to play an MMORPG?

Post Sat Jun 26, 2004 10:01 pm

City Of Heroes has the best character creation system ever in any MMORPG (they have an award that says it, along with a buncha articles on game sites) So dont worry about making a unique look. The reason people pay for MMORPGs is a strange on at that. Its really hard to explain, there are people who say "monthly payments! **** it! no way!" And I was the same way once until along came Earth And Beyond, I was very skeptical, but I did finally buy it, entered the game and realized exactly why the genre is so popular. The MMORPG games are all in a theory endless, the thing I first fell in love with was the immense worlds, unlike most of the game I had played up until then, running from mission to mission in confined areas, I was given a massive massive expanse, that I could go to and from at my leisure (or if the areas monsters permitted me to enter with my head attached) .

MMORPG's are always much bigger and more immense than any standard game and generally have much more content and land to explore. Also, as killing the same thing (ala Halo) over and over in a MMORPG would get boring, you have alot more creatures or monsters to encounter, with each new level and movement to another hunting area being a whole new experience with new monsters and their subsequent abilities to confront. The thing also with MMORPGs is the massive social spectrum, as you grow your character you become more experienced, just like aging in real life (technically). When you first start out your pretty much a nobody, but the more levels you gain, the better your outfitted and the more skilled and powerful you grow, eventually you find yourself being referred to for help and advice and sometimes realize your leading large groups or even guilds eventually.

You play a single character (made in your image or an image you enjoy in any case) and you enter the massive world, among other players, who all have their own agendas and so forth, just as in the real world. You grow and eventually become very powerful and money and all that in MMORPGs, its sort of like living a second life online playing a role you wouldnt be able to play in this life (or most likely timeframe). The patches are the paramount part of where this money is going, all online games have in-game tech support in case you need help (and those people need to be paid) most MMORPG servers are also on 24 hours a day, and anyone hosting a professional dedicated game server through a server company knows that this requires money to maintain and keep online. All MMORPGs also have content teams, who are constantly fixing and perfect the game (if you encounter any problems, they are most likely fixed very quickly) . Of course also not forgoing the new content, almost every month you can expect areas (equivalent of levels to single player gamers), new features, and new game things (like vehicles in star wars galaxies). Of course theres also the thing thats been stated already, people who pay monthly for a game play a game with an audience that is much more mature and responsible than your general game audience, though MMORPGs do have their unsavory types, its usually much less than other games. So you get access to a huge game, a nice social setting, plenty of people to hang out with, and all the riffraff like hackers and cheaters are nowhere to be seen (MMORPGS cannot be hacked or cheated on, the most rampant form is Macroing which is highly controllable by the developers).

PS: dont expect to hear from wizard for a while, i remember how galaxies was for me, I would forego any and all things on the computer and immediately login and play till i couldnt play no more Its the nature of MMORPGS (did i mention their unheathily addictive, every damn one)

As cool looking as City of Heroes is, it's going to be a cold day in Hell when I start playing it.

I really dislike the whole "paying for online play" sort of scheme; once you pay for a game, why the hell should you have to pay to play it online? It doesn't seem very equitable to me.

I assume you skipped that whole 2 paragraph post, try scrolling up

Comont54, I'm glad that you have endless amount of cash to spend, but us commoners like me and Esq ain't rich enough to pay a monthly fee of $15, especially when we have other things to spend our money on, like food.

I saw Final Fantasy 11 in a games store today , retailing at *$120*. As stated before, It will be a cold day in hell before I start to spend $180 a year , just so I can connect to their servers and interact with other players. You bring up some good points about continual updates, and new stuff being added ever month or so, but some (if not most) MMORPGS WILL go out of fashion, usually after a year or so. For all your hard earned cash and input into the game, where does it go once the developer cancels the service, and deletes all the servers ?
No where, that's all .

I'd prefer that MMPORPG's are stamped out in the future, as developers are getting greedy with them, and are demanding large amounts of cash just so you can play online. Half-Life 2 has the right idea, as it doesn't cost anything to play Counterstrike or Day of Defeat, and you get the same amount of fun doing it as you get in a MMPORPG.

That's my opinion ......

And its is a great opinion indeed, I do enjoy my fair share of free multiplayer games (im a nut for Battlefield and Enemy Territory which are both free) although I do think you are right, most MMORPGs do go out of style eventually. Most people who play them do get the most out of the game, Dark Age Of Camelot has been running for 4 years now, approaching its fifth, its had 2 expansions (both free) just this year which have increased its graphics to a point where it easily keeps up with current trends. Although MMORPGs do go out of style, think of it this way, all those years you played it, they werent wasted, its very rare people get so much time out of a game, even a game they pay monthly for. And yeah I feel your pain about the monthly fees, for people that cant pay monthly for a game its a real pain in the ass. But what I was trying to point out is that yes, you do have to pay money to play it but the misconception that some people make are that they judge the game based on the pay factor. These are all awesome games, the monthly fees are just a necessary sin.

As for MMORPGs, theres a new one coming out, from the people who made City Of Heroes, its called Guild Wars and I thought you guys may like it because its a MMORPG with no monthly fees. The game has all the goodness of MMORPGs, huge towns, tons of quests, plenty of monsters to fight, loot to obtain and so forth, but also has the core of the game being PVP, where guilds can face off in pvp battles like stuff like capture the flag and all that. The cool thing (besides no monthly fees) is the fact that the game itself will be much more fast-paced and the combat will be much more engaging than most MMORPGS. The variety of missions I have read through is truly insane, theres everything from base face-offs to destroy siege weaponry missions and just a huge variety. I just thought I would bring it up, sounds like a really awesome game.

PS: Guild Wars is made by the same people who did Diablo and Starcraft, plus designed much of the Battle.Net service, they broke off from Blizzard and made their own company (Ready At Dawn) and their making this free MMORPG, you guys should check it out
