Star Wars Galaxies

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Star Wars Galaxies

I think almost everyone here heard or read something about LucasArts' newest MMORPG. It's set in a Star Wars universe and off course you'll be able to choose between light and dark. I don't know anything about the different races you'll be able to choose, about the missions and the way you expand you character.

I'm currently downloading the "free 14 day trial" at Fileplanet.com so during the next 2 weeks I'll give my opinion on this game, which is said to be the next superb MMORPG. It seems that LucasArts is able to make good games

For anyone who can download 2 Gigabyte: FilePlanet.com

or rather that LucasArts have a talent for taking other peoples ideas and creating a StarWars version of every game-genre under the sun. Plus with the almost bottomless pit of cash that GL keeps adding to with whatever version of the dam films he's putting out this month, I'd be surprised if LucasArts couldnt come up with a good game or two. Galaxies sounds suspiciously Everquesty or Dark Age of Camelotey to me, which always gives me the heebie-geebies, so i guess i won't be playing it. Might get it for the kids, my daughter plays Everquest (i'm so ashamed, and yes she's an elf)

sorry Wiz, i just can't lay off the cynicism, can I?

Damn MMORPGs *grumble*. I tend to agree with Taw, but I'll be waiting to read your review Wiz.

Ehm... isn't every single MMORPG out there a Everquest/Ultima Online clone?
Don't be to quick with your judgement Taw

Anyways, I'm almost at half a Gigabyte now Damn Fileplanet with their capped downloadspeed

The economy for SWG is in major decline just now. I'd wait first before trying.

A question about this one ande others too. Why would anyone would be willing to PAY to play the game on-line? I can see fereelancer or another like game, but to pay to even be able to play the game is the pits.

I don't know Finalday. The first 14 days are free, and after all, I'm Dutch
But if a game is so addicting, I think every one will pay a little amount of money to receive constant updates and great gameplay.

Never payed to play online, I think that Final Fantasy XI will be my first.

I love the older Final Fantasys, but I would go broke paying to play on-line. I have some 35-40 hours of game times for those games. The 40 was on ff8 and I wasn't finished even then.

for two very simple and connected reasons, FD. it's a niche market, largely made of older, more serious gamers who have the money and don't have the time, so a long steady progression suits them better, and by the same token they don't want to be plagued by a load of freeloading newbie Darth Dereks or h4xx4rx trashing the space empire they've sopent the last 6 months building up, so a dedicated pay server is actually a good idea IF you're prepared to pay for that privilege.

I played galaxies for a while, its incredibly fun and addicting for about a week or two. I believe youll get frickin sick of it by the end of the trial. Its not really new either its been out there for about a year now I believe. It has some really fun elements like vehicles and the new space expansion but It's still plagued by a constant level grind and it would be great if this grind was fun but in reality its not its just boring. I dont like it but if you find it to be a game you like then more power to ya . MMORPG's im playing now are EvE Online and City of Heroes (the latter I highly recommend, very very good game). I also remember a for a short while people hated SWG, cause the devs would post everything was fine and the game was running smoothly and people were going crazy over all the bugs and problems and it hit a slump when a huge chunk of people left so now their letting anyone be a jedi and all, its really interesting, very tumultous the galaxies path has been . Oh and wiz you may want to stay away from FFXI, I have that one too and its incredibly boring, very very slow progression. I played for a good 2 weeks and only got to level 7 out of 150, and even so playing almost every day. You may want to check out City Of Heroes (www.cityofheroes.com) its been a PC best-seller for a good 3 weeks now, its really fun and a nice departure from the sword and sorcery and the sci-fi out there (besides flying around a city is cool) .

PS: Well if all MMORPGs are everquest (hate it) and ultima (hate it) clones then I guess all FPS's are clones of doom . Or how about every RTS is a clone of age of empires, just cause one game starts it and theres more games in the genre doesnt mean its being cloned.

Doom was made due to the success of Wolfenstien3D - which i still have on a 386 at home. That game really was cool as a cucumber when i first got it I dunno what came before that, but its definately recognisable that they all follow the same method as set in stone by Wolfenstein3D all those years ago (and boy is it some years ago!). The first person, hand infront, basically what you have now but with crap sound, blocky graphics..........and worse AI. Was brilliant - thoroughly loved that game....

I agree with Comont. SWG is interesting for a while, but eventually it gets quite boring. It's good having those free 14-day trials, more MMORPGs should have them.
