never seen the film, looks cr*p but did read the short story years ago. King's early work was far more inventive and faster-paced, this was a great story in it's original format.

I've seen it. Total crap. You know, most of Stephen King's book-based movies, with the exception of two, have been less than stellar. Let's see, Dreamcatcher(have both movie and book) The Stand(got the book), Pet Semetary, Rose Red, Bag of Bones, and some others I can't think of right now. The best movies based on his books were The Shawshank Redemption with Morgan Freeman, and The Green Mile with Tom Hanks. Those two were some of the best movies I have seen. Maximum Overdrive was just plain silly. It had cool explosions, though.

Shining was prob the best novel-film adaptation, because of Kubrick. Carrie of course was very good, schlock ending though, erm I q enjoyed Christine, and even the Stand had its moments although it was overblown and confusing and not really that good at all. Some of the later ones like Tommyknockers and Pet Sematary were just downright cr*p. haven't seen Dream catcher but I'm reliably informed it's rather tosh.

a shame more hasn't been made of King's short stories, which as I said above are imo superior to most of his full novels. I'd love to see "Toys" made into a decent production becuase the toy soldiers could be superbly done with cgi. And "Crouch End" which would make a great Lovecraft spin for the Outer Limits.

Oh yeah the other reason i want to rent it is because of the AC DC soundtrack

@Taw: For The Green Mile, no. The book was actually released years ago in short novels. I think there were about 4 or 5 parts. Then when the movie was announced all those books were combined into one. I actually never read the Shawshank Redemption. I want to, though. As for Dreamcatcher: Crappy book made into a crappy movie. Unfortunately, I have both as a reminder of how bad movies and books can get.

Taw, The Shawshank Redemption was originally called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and was 1 of 4 short stories in one of King's books called "Different Seasons". I know this because it was my favourite book as a kid. Another short story in that book was called "The Body" and was later made into "Stand By Me". To the best of my knowledge that book was written in the late seventies and there was no original intention for them to become screenplays. In fact, I believe I'm right in saying that King fought against Shawshank being made as the original book was written from Morgan Freeman's character's perspective, and thus the ending was much more of a surprise....something I highly agree with, although I think the film did actually do the book justice. "Stand by Me" was very accurate to the book, but I don't think King gave his permission originally for that one either.

There was another story in the same book called "Apt Pupil" that I believe was quite recently made into a film. But that was the story I used to skip because I found it the weakest of the 4....so I never went to see the movie. Did anyone else?

"Different Seasons" though, is one of imho Stephen King's finest moments. For those who haven't tried his "lighter" stuff, you should give that one a go. It wasn't until the release of "The Dark Half" that I saw this sort of quality in his writing again.

oh thx for that boys, i didn't know that, and it's always good to learn summat new I largely abandoned King after he wrote the Stand and until recently I've take no interest in him at all.

It is said the he has a couple of books out onder another name as well. Due, I think, to contract limits.

"Richard Bachman" - its the pseudonym he wrote under in the early 80s. He just wanted to test his popularity as a writer by doing some different stuff under a different persona....remember by then, he was a legend in his own typewriter...

He wrote "The Running Man" under that name - a fantastic book that was murdered by arnie and his croanies in that god-awful film of the same name. I recommend that book to everyone...it a great read if you wipe from your head Arnie as the main character. Really well written in a "countdown" style. Worth an afternoon of anyone's time methinks.

Spot the guy who was a King freak in his teens I don't appreciate his new stuff as much as I did as a kid - but to be fair, I don't read as much as I used to so I don't have the same enthusiasm.
