What do you think?

We got this one quote in our compstudy exam papre, it goes more or less like this: "All irc's are evil, they promote profanity, abuse and immoral actions(cant remember what they said here but it comes down to that) This is a danger to societhy and should be stamped out"
irc stands for international relay chat (I always thought it stood for internet relay chat, oh well)

1)Do you agree with the above statement?
2)What exactly are an irc?
3)Is it possible to "stamp out" irc's?

I think there was another question but I cant remember, there was also a similar question about Forums
"Forums are bad, you learn nothing there" This wasnt the quote but it was what it cam down to. The questions on this was

4)What is forums?
5)Is it true that forums are bad and disordrely?

They even had a question later on about

6) CAn the internet be controlled? If yes, How?

me answers

1)No, there are admins who can control the rooms, it will depend mosly on them what happens.

2)It is a chatroom (I had a very long answer here, but I'm not going to type it, I dont need to make up time)

3)No, its not difficult putting up an irc server, ppl will just put up their own if others are closed.

4)A place where ppl posts messages and others answers

5)No, there are strickt rules and moderators to enforce them.

6) no

My answers in the exam was a bit different, longer mostly. But what would you ppl say?

I am not your stepping stone to success!

Banning irc would IMO be the same as banning any other form of communication, like talking.

Who the hell wrote that paper? Sounds like they believe in a police state. Though that wouldn't necessarily be bad thing, what with all the brutality. But back on topic, no of course you shouldn't ban IRC, it's not like it's killing people. Forums are bad?! What about all of those forums run by youth organisations devoted to stopping teen suicide, or those ones about eating disorders? Come on, it's like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union all over again, stopping freedom of speech and the free press. Sorry, I know I went off on a tangent but still.....

People have it all wrong these days, instead of discriminating and hating others for being black or ugly, we should practise fairness and hate every living thing equally.

1. Well, that statement is ridiculous- if all chat rooms were evil, then that must make everyone who goes on them evil, and a LOT of people go on them. That statement was obviously made by some middle-aged Fascist who'd never been on a chatroom and simply judges them by what he sees on the news.

2. Er... well, I think they're either MSN-type programs, where you talk to one person only, or chat websites where loads of people chatter at once. I have no idea really, so I'm describing both when I say "chatrooms".

3. Well, that's a tough question. Certainly, the Government could make chatroom-going a fine worthy, or even arrest-worthy offence if it came to it. This would however be utterly pointless, as it would be all hell to try to enforce it. If it happened, though, a lot of the non-evil people would probably stop using irc, for fear of retribution, but the evil people would still go on it, as they'd probably be more experienced at covering their tracks (not that it's that difficult).

4. Well forums are essentially a very similar formula to chatrooms, but firstly the forum is divided into sub-forums and then into threads- this makes for focused disscussion, as when people are in a thread anything they post should be relevant to the thread. Also forums encourage thinking before posting, as there is longer in between posts than in chatrooms, which means their posts are usually more intelligent, or at very least don't read like a textmessage.

5. n0, its nt diosredrly U R al dsordly n00bs lmao!1!!1!

6. The only realistic way for the internet to be controlled, would be for every new website created, it would have to pass through a government regristration, a kind of stripsearch for websites. Also, greater action on the part of ISPs, like AOL and Freeserve, and entities which provide websites to people should be made to pay a fine if they are hosting illegal activities, which would encourage them to crackdown. But really, the internet is still infinitely too big for any nonextrem measures to work in any meaningful way.

DUCK!

IRC isn't evil, the people who use it are evil!

ban them, and the rest of the inter-web too - it's the medium of Satan. You wouldn't catch a clean-living soul like me posting on inter-web newsgroups or chatrooms.

..the Devil will find work for idle hands to do; i stole and I lied, and why? because you asked me to..

I'm not sure where that questions came from, the quotes are probably from articles or something and then has been used in exam papers and from there it was put in ours.

This was under the general knowledge section, I already mentioned two other stupid questions
What is an e-mail virus? Is it illegal to send such a virus to somebody

I was very angry about this paper, it was a joke

I read somewhere that some people used irc for spamming purpouses. iirc it was one of teh creators of irc who did it...

Thats why I love this place. Clean, fun and no nuts. Chatrooms are too dangerous these days. Too many weirdoes and those who prey on children. Policing will be will be difficult at best, due to finding the people.

Post Sun Jun 13, 2004 8:53 am

NO nuts?
Fd I think you forgot about Taw and those

ho-ho very drole, Miss Voortrekker - why don't you go back across the Transvaal and go live in a kraal or something?

..there is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro..

I don't think there's that many wierdos on IRC, they're mainly people with a twisted sense of humour. Its easier to crack disturbing or gross jokes when the people who are going to hear it are anonymous.
Anyway, so what if they are nuts? It's not like they can come and kill you through your computer. All you've got to do is never reveal any personal details on a chatroom.

EDIT: number 4 for sw: Transvaal doesn't exist anymore, it's now Mpumalanga
