actually Blaze about once every couple or three years i go to Menin Gate, Vimy Ridge and the Ypres memorial, but never when there's anything official on; those are the Great War cemeteries and the number of graves is, well, awful in the truest sense of the word. I can't say i really like going, but i think it's important my kids at least are aware of what happened because i can't trust the schools or the media to give them the right story..

"here's the grave of your great-great-uncle Jacob, kids, awarded the Military Medal posthumously after the Somme, so that Field-Marshal Haig could move his drinks cabinet 3 feet closer to Berlin.."

..And there was nothing more true then that Taw,

of what I remember reading, the Battle for the Somme was a stalemate in the end, it lasted from the 1st of July to the end of november 1916, in that single battle alone, 1 million lives were lost, and if I remember correctly, most of them were on allied side.

Opps, I got my post wrong. The Russians had lost 25 million not 2.5!

That figure of 25 million has been questioned from the standpoint of who was included. Men in arms - only, not 25 million. Including civilians slaughtered by the racial purification teams following the German front lines, likely a combined total of 25 milliion if not more.

@Tawakalna- yes, this is what I really meant in my post. What I was really pi$$ed about was that while the West made many sacrifices in the war, it seemed ridiculous that the Russians (and everyone in Germany and Japan who died, OK maybe the SS deserved to be lined up and shot, but the Axis still lost many good men, who wanted only to defend their country, not to mention the vast civilian casaulties they suffered) were utterly and completely ignored about a celebration that should have been about honouring those who died, NOT those who took part in D-Day. There were other battles than D-Day, and people should never forget it. The Russians, Axis and countless others aren't remembered with little more than misplaced hate- even if their governments fought on "the wrong side", doesn't make the universal sacrifice of their men, women and children anything other than what it is, and they too deserve to be remembered.

DUCK!

Blimey, why not grasp the idea behind d-day for what it was? the war defining moment for the allies on THIS side of germany, as they made their "war defining" moment upon which EVERYTHING, from our perspective, hung in the balance. If we failed we would probabily have never really recovered at all. The rememberance was for those that died in that one moment that defined the war outcome from our prospective. It was an important day, hence why its remembered.............

There are OTHER days that remember other battles, and indeed the war in general......both of them. I suggest you do some research into it, as it almost seems you think that its ONLY that day which remembers the fallen from the war. I am sure the Russians remember their men as well, they probabily have several days devoted to their battles........

Anyway - this thread continues to remain vastly away from the subject of D-day landings, as it was brought down into politics (which everyone knows are foribidden), and without any hesitation, people continued to post about their personal views about political motivations about the Celebrations for the occasion - which the original post didn't even mention............ I refrained from posting any comments on the recent posts, as i was only too aware that it was a pointless effort, and a waste of time. However, its now time the thread was locked, as you would never know what the original motivation of the thread was about due to a few.
