C'mon Zlo. We've been making lousy movies about Europe for ages. Aren't you used to it by now?

basically the Iliad is "a stupid love story" - with battles. And a few gods and goddesses.

a stupid love story, ancient greek style

Post Mon May 24, 2004 12:48 pm

O.T.

Which then raises the question:

Is a War that is said to have been prompted by love any more stupid than one motivated by religion?

Grom you daft twonk, what the hell is there off topic about Troy in a thread call "Troy"?

Yeah, I liked Bana the best and the one playing Odyssius(sp) was good aswell. Brad Pitt wasn't that bad imo. I thought the girl playing Helen was worse. Fitted nicely with Blooms acting imo.

The movie imo wasn't bad or crappy, it's just not as good as the hype leads you to believe. I still had fun the second half tho.

And Oceans 12 is on my "to see" list aswell, just as The Day After Tomorrow. And Shrek 2. And King Arthur, seen the preview, quite promising imo (and Lady Guinevere looks fit yet again )

And there's gonna be a new Will Smith movie I suspect nased on a Isaac Asimov novel (was it him? I thought it was) with the robots adn their 3 rules of robotica or something. What was the robot's name?

@Indy's last post: No, both are stupid imo.

Post Mon May 24, 2004 2:47 pm

That's a pretty loaded question, Indy. Are you sure you don't want to retract it?

Post Mon May 24, 2004 2:51 pm

oh pfui, it wasn't started by love at all, that's just a romantic legend. it was started because the mainland Greeks were sick of being taxed to f*** by the Trojans for passage through the Dardanelles to their Black Sea colonies, plus they were jealous of it's wealth and decided to have a dip themselves. Not that I was there or anything...

Oh King Arthur looks like a pretty sweet movie. In Dark Age Of Camelot the entire games story centers around the death of king arthur, besides that he's just cool. Cant wait to see that, especially those big battle scenes. I dont know about Aliens Vs. Predator since I didnt take much of a liking to the game. Theres a new Pixar flick coming called "The Incredibles" and thats bound to be a blast, and again I play another game called City Of Heroes and "The Incredibles" both the city and the heroes look almost identitical. I like the fact that games have expanded to a point that to get the movie effect in a game you no longer have to play ****ty movie-games but rather can play others which are actually damn good. Im also eagerly awaiting that film Oliver Stone announced thats gonna be about Alexander The Great. Lots of great movies coming.

"King Arthur", eh? Who does it have starring in it? Can somebody spot me a link? We'll see how "accurate" it is; I studied him at Uni (it seemed like a good idea at the time ).

In the Illiad almost all of the Gods n' Godesses I know intervened. Lemme' think Athena(Minerva), Hera(Juno), and Aphrodite(Venus) were having a contest over who was better so they asked Zeus to decide. Zeus, not wnating to make such a delicate decision, sent them to Paris, a handosme sheep hearder. Athena promised him war glory, Hera promised im riches and power, Aphrodite promsied him the fiarest wife in all the land. He chose Aphrodite and then he went to Helen yadda yadda yadda, you know what comes after that.

@esq Here's your king arthur linky ya lazy so-n-so I don't reckon you can go wrong with Clive Owen as Arthur and Keira Knightley as Guinevere....but the trailer looks fantastic....check it out on quicktime.com - I can't be bothered to look it up for ya

Clive's a great choice for Arthur, not too sure about Keira even if she is a fittie; Cherie Lunghi did it well in Excalibur. That Merlin mini-series a few years back with Sam Neill was awful, but the Arthur of the Britons kids' series on ITV years ago, with Michael Praed, was excellent; lacking only a decent budget.

One of the best Arthur stories I know is Rosemary Sutcliffe's "The Lantern Bearers" which isn't actually about Arthur, but a young Romano-British officer who stays behind to protect his family when the last troops leave in the 5th C. gets captured, spends years in captivity, escapes, and hooks up with Arthur's boys; it's actually rather good if a little heavy on the historical romance, but q evocative of the confusion and insecurity of the period.

I hope they get that right in the new film. It would be wonderful if it did well, a film about a proper British hero; my fear is that it might bomb because all the foreigners will go "King who? Where's all the magic and dragons and stuff?" expecting to see something not unlike LOTR.

Indy: lol! BTW, actually, I was expecting a different reaction, i.e. pointng out tat Peterson is German (which still doesn't make the difference in this case - I just saw the move and it's what I expected). Watched the trailer of "King Arthur". Funny enough, according to one Polish Fantasy writer, one called Andrzej Sapkowski, if Arthur was a real person, he would have looked very much like some uncivilized barbarian in dirty furs, and "his castle" - a shaggy dug-out, if not worse... Could be difficult to make an epic movie about such a hero

An idea came to my head and is now desperately searching for brain
