I am exactly the same irl as I am on TLR or anywhere else. Ask Arcon, or Ed. i don't have a persona, it's just me, me, me. Although certain aspects of my life and character are hidden on TLR, they are the same aspects that I hide irl, the bits I dont want anyone to find out about.

This persona thing really annoys me. it's bad enough boys pretending to be chicks, but then you have idiots pretending to be vampires or reincarnations prests from Karnak or some such rubbish. Playtime. nothing more than dressing up but on the internet. ok its harmless fun but some of these fools can't draw the line.

We've had it here, and still do. Unf I think its utter toss and anyone with half a brian can see through it and deduce more about the real person from what they pretend to be.

Taw - Hey, ease up there . I'm not referring to some guy called "Bob" in the US pretending to be "Mary596", but rather the difference between an online personage and a real life personage. I mean this in terms of personality traits, beliefs, ideologies, etc.

No, I guess i'm the same here as irl, but then again, I act one way when I'm with friends and another way when I'm with other ppl I dont really know. Thats prolly why only ppl that knows me likes me. But I dont pretend to be something I'm not I dont like pretending and I suck at it in anyway

@sw, people do like you here. I'm a little happier here, as there are a lot here that can cheer me up after a bad day at work. I am just as curius about computers here as any where else, ect. Besides Esq, you have seen what I look like, Some people who meet me after writeing or phone calls only don't think I am one in the same, as they pictured someone else in their mind.

I knew what you meant, Esq, i just extended the principle. But the truth is, with the anonymity offered by the "interweb" is that even on TLR () there are q a few people who pretend to be something they are not and who's online personas are at odds with the reality of their lives. But I'm not gonna name names, after all that's a matter for them. I just don't understand why it's necessary for anyone to do that.

Moreover they really dig this online persona thing and have it formalised to some extent. Rules for being some invented character? why not just be yourself, I find it a LOT easier.

Depends upon the amount of privacy a person believes he/she needs, I'd say.

For example, while perhaps not quite as neurotic as Esqy says he is, I don't want just anyone to know that much about me in my private life. I pick and choose those with whom I care to share informtion about myself.

I feel far less comfortable being so open although that is in terms of my personal details. I think, however, the way I "speak" here and the opinions I put forward are the same as in real life. So I am being honest with everyone. Just not telling people all that much about my personal cv.

I have not always been this way, but, I look at all the mistakes I have made in life, would like to help another not do some of the things I did, and have to pay for it, so I do tell more than others. I look at it like this, when you talk to someone about a situation, example finding a good apple, but have never done it yourself, its harder to relate to it. But if you have done a similar thing, it makes it easyer to relate. And telling that, tells the other person that you truly do understand their position, choice, or what ever the situation. And, yes, i have been accused of talking too much to.

Yep, I'm the same in real life. I'm always into complaining about poor government, irl.

a rather moot point is, does your choice of nickname/handle (whatever) directly influence the expression of your persona? for example, were i to adopt the name "Twinkle Echo" or "Belle Starr" would i sooner or later express myself differently than I would as say "Darth Derek" "h4xx0rx" "Superpatriot" or "Casiotone for the Painfully Alone"

well i didn't quite mean that. but it would make them a total twonk, would it not? You would expect someone who took the the name Darth [whatever to be part of the wannabee h4xx0rx r0xx0rx crowd, the type of foul pre-pubescent vermin to avoid like the plague when you foray into MP or <gasp> other forums than TLR.
