Rec - Indeed. I assume that by "big" you mean "well-rounded"? That is a product of societal thinking, and by the sterotypes that are presented in the media as you said. I agree, if you look at many of the villains on children's television programs, they are often stupid and well-rounded. That is why forums are useful; no such preconceptions to worry about. By the way, where are these pictures of Arcon?
Wiz - I agree completely. It is well-known that most people act differently around different groups of people. My belief is that this has to do with societal/group expectations, peer-group pressure (if any), cultural/relgious beliefs, and/or image. Again, the anonymity present in the forum/chatroom system allows people to disregard such expectations because there are few preconceptions.
Chet - I think that the phrase "real life" *is* fraught with preconceptions, but it is a useful phrase in this context, because is helps us to differentiate between our online relationships, and those that we have off-line. I think that that separation is important, as you can clearly see from this thread that people often act differently (to a greater or lesser extent) when they are here on TLR.
topher - That's a useful skill, and I'm quiet in public too. I just wish I could learn to shut up more around the family; I'd get in fewer arguments that way
.
zlo - Interesting. Tell me, why would you be more open in real life? Is it because certain conversational topics are considered taboo here on TLR or... ?
