Apologies for MSN Users / HELP ME!

Hi,

I'd just like to make a quick apology for all of you who have tried to contact me on MSN over the last few months and been ignored....this goes out especially to Locutus who is still persistent, I'm sorry mate, let me explain.

A couple of months ago I updated my win xp and messenger/windows media/office by visiting the microsoft updates site and having a mammoth afternoon of updating. Everything's fine apart from MSN Messenger. For some reason, no matter what settings I give the f***in thing, it ALWAYS launches when I connect to the internet...and worst of all...it NEVER appears in my system tray any more. This is extremely irritating, especially as I have broadband so the thing is permamently on. The only way I can get rid of the bugger is by shutting down the system process. Does anyone know of a fix for this?? Its driving me barmy.

Now the reason why I haven't been replying - this is mainly because you are talking to either my computer illiterate girlfriend or dead air. More often than not my machine restarts its broadband connection, I don't know why it does, but it doesn't cause any problems except to you guys on MSN. Anyone using messenger thinks that I've just logged on, when actually its my computer resetting the connection. So more often than not, I'll get home at 10pm, go to check my email, and find that I have a "Hi" from several of you waiting for me. So I apologise - I'm not ignoring you I promise - I'm just having problems!

Does anyone know of a way to uninstall messenger when XP is the OS? I just want to get rid of the f***er now! If not, can anyone help me with this problem about it not appearing in system tray?

Many tanks and high explosives
Grom.

oooo i got teh same problem.. i fixed it by changing my hotmail pass.. now it doesn't sign in by itself anymore..

i had this problem, but it was with windows messenger.

1: set up a 'dummy' MSN account. [email protected]
2: set windows messenger to open auto with the dummy account.
3: download MSN messenger 6.1 and install.
4: launch MSN 6.1 with your normal account.

This worked for me, but no guarantees.

launch messenger, go to options, then under the general tab untick "allow automatic sign in when connected to the Internet".

@viator - thanks I'll give that method a shot tonight!

@dan - tried that, it seemed like the obvious thing to do in the first place...in fact I've chopped and changed ALL of the options. I think its a messenger update bug.

kill it as a service in msconfig>services. Don't bother trying to uninstall it.

sweetness sweetness I was only joking when i said, I'd like to smash every tooth in your head..

ah! ok! this sounds good....now....how dya do that again?

heh, sorry mate, I'm gonna need you to explain how to do that one...

start > run > type 'msconfig' > tab 'services' un-tick messenger by microsoft corporations..

@taw, name of service = messenger, provided by microsoft services, correct?

^_^

excellent thanks...I'll do that tonight.

By stopping it like this, will that kill the program altogether or just from the boot-up or what?

Post Thu May 13, 2004 7:50 am

it's actually msgms.exe

it just stops the prog from starting up on boot. Don't try friggin about uninstalling it as a lot of other stuff is dependent on its process tree, and it's so integrated into XP it aint worth trying to cut it out. Just kill it as a service.

however if you have the downloaded version of Messenger, not the one that comes bundled with XP, you should be able to uninstall that in Control Panel like you do with anything else.

where's my stuff?

sweetness sweetness I was only joking when i said, I'd like to smash every tooth in your head..

Tnx guys, I had the same problem. I unticked the crappy Messenger and about to reboot, lets see if this works

Edit: Nope, not a chance It says it can't be closed due to various programs still running which actually use it. But that's plain male-cow-droppings, cause I'm not running any of the programs they say I might have running. Stupid MS crap. Oh well, I got it to the point it doesn't sign up anymore, but that's about it I'm afraid.

msconfig>startup, try disabling it there instead.

You can also uninstall Messenger by editing "sysoc.inf" (I think), and removing the word "HIDDEN" from the Messenger line. This should allow Messenger to appear in the "Add/Remove Programs" Menu. It's somewhere under "Components" as I recall.

Actually the easier way is this:

Look up "uninstall windows messenger" on Google. It should give you several results on the command line to use to uninstall windows messenger. It's quick and dirty, and relatively painless since you don't have to tinker with anything! (It's just a simple copy/paste into the run dialog box).

Hope it helps!

This is a helpful link, since it shows you both methods (with and without SP1) of uninstalling windows messenger.

If you want to remove it, Esq's way is easy. Just searched and found it, the word to remove is Hide, and it will then show up in windows add/remove screen.
