@taw, the actual exe file is called
msmsgs.exe (MicroSoft MeSsaGeS)

well, I tried it guys and it didn't work. It doesn't start up when windows boots (or at least I don't think it does but I can't see the bugger) - but as soon as I load up IE I start getting pounded with messages from people. I'm getting extremely f***ed off with it now. HELP!!

is this windows messenger we talking about if so u can use group policy editor to stop it from being loaded, I did!.
