Longhorn System Requirements Leaked

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

/<------------ wake me up when it actually works (when they release Service Pack 1 to fix all the bugs reported on release)

I'm not being an unpaid public beta-tester for MS - again...

thsoe specs are alien. it'll cost a bomb to get those specs.. getting longhorn itself won't be a problem, it'll be dirt cheap on this end

@mustie, yor running XP on a 450 mhz with 64mb ram ?!? i'm having slight troubles on my 1.7ghz 256mb ram!
how on earth do you keep your machine together?

EDIT: arania below does have a point.
and i think i'll stick to XP pro.

i must admit, those specs are a bit advanced, but they arent alien, I can give you alien, i could give you spectral-level req's if you want.

Questions:
When does an O/S need 1000Gb?
When does an O/S need a graphics card, period?
When does an O/S need a dual core CPU?
when is microsoft going to stop???????

Post Thu May 06, 2004 2:48 am

Mustang/SS - I don't believe those specs personally, but notice that the specs are not supposed to be for high-end machines, but for the Average LH PC.

Taw - I know what you mean .

Arania - LH is supposed to need a good graphics card because it is supposed to have a 3D-Accelerated interface. Just another thing that will clog up the RAM and cause more problems .

@Esq, I thought, perhaps, the story got it wrong. Or you. Either way, I had lowered expectations for fact and details.

If you think about it, it does sound like a server requirement. Home systems almost never have a duel cpu. I bet this is the case on the specs, and the home ones will be less. Prob, 512mb ram 2.5gbHD space ect.

@Taw, Esqy, LOL

I've often wondered why MS goes through all the effort of naming the OS prods differently when everyone know its the SP1 you want anyway.

W3.11 basically was SP1. W98se was an SP1. etc.

I'm looking at things on the upgrade front from the opposite direction now. How cheaply can I put together the best of current technology and, ahem, with XP Pro as my OS. And setting up my old PC as a Linux box/ dual boot to Me.

LOL - smells like BS to me......

When an operating system that is a platform for programs and other stuff to run OFF of takes more computing power than 4 of the highest spec games out on todays market.....hmm - well, I would love to see the supposed visuals. Gone are the old icons, in come morphing holographic projections with touch activation or some other stuff. No more watching a vid on your PC monitor, with that power it has to project it INTO a 3D freestanding projection. No more little ditties - i want a fully orchestrated harmonies with vocalised movement. Sod the backgrounds - i want real life streaming news headlines as my background - but not info, actual 3d images!

The problem with leaks is that they are never trustworthy - just like real leaks. That info could easily have been inflated by people, or taken out of context. I cannot see them planning on making something workable on the soul basis of predicting the future computation power of computers, and the global affordability of the hardware to run it. However, having said that, car companies still make supercars

*sniff* i smell a mole
wow that is one mother of a pc whats the price gonna be $10,000 (sarcasm)

"Alright son, here's your choice. You can have a new car, $30,000; Or you can have a new computer barely capable of running Longhorn, $35,000."

Let's see, I think I'd rather have college than this.

SS - That hurts. I don't make those sorts of mistakes!

Chips - Probably true, but there's a link in the article to the "original" leaked memo though.

I'm not sure if this is true, but I've been told on several accounts that Longhorn is just another step towards microsoft's world domination. It supposedly uses new file formats that make everything extra large; they want this so that you will have to rent space on Microsofts servers for lots of $$$ to have any kind of files. All privacy obviously goes out the window with that. Additionally, I was told Longhorn will have no backwards compatibility, meaning no playing Freelancer or any other of your favorite games. The final change will come soon when Microsoft stops selling software such as Freelancer, and insteat requires you to lease it; i.e. get the game for free and pay a continual monthly fee to be able to use that. If any of this is the case, I draw the line at XP. This has gone far enough.
