I'm afraid I'm with rec and musty (hehe can I call you musty?! aaawww go on )...I believe I've had this conversation with Taw before...I enjoyed A.N...and for a while it was definitely up there in my top 20, but I personally would never put it at number one! BUT! Taw raised an interesting point, which he didn't last time to my recollection....he saw it at the cinema on its first release and still remembers the impact it had on him. THAT is extremely relevant....I remember the first time I caught Pulp Fiction on the big screen - I was totally blown away - I was 19 at the time and I felt like Tarantino had summed up my entire generation in just over 2 hours of celluloid. Twas amazing. I got a similar rush a year later from "Natural Born Killers"...I believe that timing has a great deal to do with a movie's impact.

I must however defend "independence day", nonsensical b*ll*cks it may be, but it has nursed me through well over a dozen hangovers so it holds a proud position in my collection. A film doesn't have to be good to be good! (que?!) I.D.is pure whimsical sh**e, but has reasonable fx and has a script that is so bad its easy just to let it flood over you...perfect for those days when you don't want to think, you just want to stare...works for me

That doesn't put Highlander 2 into the same category though - that is just pure unadulterated ****. The script is SOOOOO bad, it doesn't drift over you, it stumbles and bangs your head occasionally. The fx are TERRIBLE. The storyline completely contradicts EVERYTHING that the first film told us - which makes no sense as the first movie was a massive hit??! On a similar scale it would be like taking "Goodfellas" and making "Goodfellas 2: The Quickening", in which a bunch of really nice, old, french men who like to play chess a lot, occasionally get together and play poker in a game called "The Quickening". ITS B*LL*CKS!

Exactly. Not to bore anyone but, for the longest time, Casablanca was looked upon as a second rate movie. Second rate production values, over-melodramatic sentimentality, etc. And yet, today, it is a classic.

Why? We love the actors. We love the way the portrayed their characters. The story has become part of our emotional/moral psyche. We love the young Ingrid Bergman with every fiber of our existences, etc.

I have Highlander 2: The Renegade Edition on VHS because I have the other 3 on DVD, I think that's going to be the way it. The Renegade is better because they leave out the mention of Planet Zeist. Unfortunately the whole movie was total mess. Highlander 1 is the best of the bunch by far.

I quite like ID4 too, even though it's tosh and mawkish and hammy, because the plot has a solid base in War of the Worlds, the themes are all very familiar sci-fi/war stuff, and it is very well made, with quality actors and a very experienced production team. it's a formulaic film but it works, always good for a late night action/sci-fi rush (Starship Troopers is better though )

I like ID4 because of the characters and how well they develop them. You actually learn the people in the story instead of thinking that it's just an actor on a set. They also have a good story line and, of course, good lines. Any movie that I can quote twice in a very short period of time has got to be good. You also have to love that at the very beginning the SETI guy is listening to R.E.M's It's the end of the world as we know it .

Post Thu Apr 15, 2004 9:27 am

you noticed how surprised he was to get a signal? Even the SETI people don't really believe in aliens...

I know, remember "If this is not an insanely beautiful woman, i'm hanging up."

"What's with the golf balls, you're trying to kill me here!"

"Mr. President, it's the secretary of defense" "Hello.... Can you say that again?"

Edit, fixed. punctuation"

hehe yeah I enjoyed the REM touch too...and Taw, I do agree, Starship Troopers is definitely higher up the stakes in the late night tosh category - although I prefer that one with the speakers turned up so it tends to annoy the neighbours somewhat

Maybe we should start a Late Night Tosh TV thread, I'd be interesting in knowing what films people like to have "wash over them" when they're drunk, bored, hungover or all three

@Taw, no I haven't read Heart of Darkness yet. It's by Joseph Conrad isn't it? All I know about it is it's about a guy exploring the congo, the dark heart of Africa, hence the title. Is Apocalypse Now a modern translation of it or something?
I've got this long list of books I want to read and I'm very slowly getting through them. I'm reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac at the moment, but schoolwork is getting in the way most of the time.

Kerouac's good.

HoD isn't really about a man exploring the Congo, although that is the backdrop. i won't tell you any more cos you really should come to it with no preformed ideas (if possible)
