Digital Cameras?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Digital Cameras?

I need some help with digital cameras. I know practically nothing about them[?}

Some questions- What is macro mode?

I use a 2.1 megapixel still shot camera and I have no complaints on image quality. I imagine that a 4 megapixel ought to satisfy your immediate needs
unless or until you get really much more "professional" minded.

Many people say that unless you use a 6 megapixel or better digital camera, you will not be able to hold a candle to a top quality chemical photo camera. I would not know how to begin to discuss that type of a comparison. I cannot see myself spending the kind of money it takes to own a 6 megapixel camera. All I wanted was a digital replacement for a simple point and shoot film camera that I owned so I am very happy with what I have.

As for storage, 16mb seems a little cramped. The higher the megapixel, the larger the file size, even with JPG compression. My guess is that @ 4megapixel,
16 MB will hold as few as 3 to 4 shots taken at highest possible resolution with no compression or as many as 20 or so with average resolution and default compression.

Can't say what the Macro mode is.... the other stuff you know, right?

I'm getting a 256mb card for it, anyways, so the memory should be all right.
Thanks

For an amatuer you dont need 4 Million pixels
a 16Mb card would hold few photos, as for extra
let me check *checks said catalouge page*

yes you can add up to 128Mb of memory via the MMC
slot (multi media card)

cause i dont think you can get 256Mb MMC cards

You can get 128MB cards, and they'll store a lot. Rememeber to check for a high "Optical Zoom"; "Digital Zoom" is a complete waste of time. Optical is want you want.

I have a 2.0 megapixel Olympus, it's ok but it's just for snapping and quickpics, I use a 35mm SLR for real photgraphy. I was thinking about getting a 5.0 megapixel jobbie though in a SLR format. Can't stand parallax viewfinder cameras, and I really can't get used to using the view panel; that's for stupid people who can't use an in-lens readout or a split-screen focus. mutter mutter grumble, new fangled rubbish, bah.

LOL - Mine's an Olympus too, a D10.

All that the view panel is good for is to pick up grease smudges from my nose.

This by far is one of the best sites to get reviews of every possible digital camera...bar none.

My camera has no optical zoom.
And Stinger, methinks those would be a bit out of my price range.

cheers Rob, that linky's already made my mind up for my next purchase, and I quoth;

"Following on from Olympus USA's move at the end of January Olympus UK has announced a £200 trade-in promotion on their digital SLR E-System. You can take any SLR camera, film or digital for a £200 rebate against the E-1 digital SLR body and 14-54 mm lens bundle."

I'll have a bit of that, I have a Yashica FX-3 that's near the end of it's useful life, and they've always been buggers to get K-mount stuff for. 200 squid trade in? not 'arf.

Post Wed Mar 17, 2004 3:50 am

This is simple....if its 4 megapixels for under 150 squid, buy it. I use 6 mp for work (ie. high quality pro photos) and a 2.0 for home use. The 2.0 prints as good as if not better than a standard camera. So quality wise, you're onto a bargain.

Don't worry about it having 16Mb, its got an SD slot - same cards I use. You can pick up a juicy card that will hold a couple of hundred high res images for about 50 quid.

And finally, make sure it has an optical zoom....NOT a digital zoom. My home camera has both...optical as standard and then if you really really really need to get closer you can go a little bit further with digital. As a rule, if its digital only and you zoom in at 4.0 megapixels, you're pictures will look terrible.

That answer all your questions?

Like I said- no optical zoom.
I hope to be using it for my holiday photos, so I doubt I'd really need optical zoom. It'll be needed for quick pictures, so I doubt I'd really use a zoom too much anyway- too slow.
Also, could you give a rough guess as to how many photos you could keep on a 256mb card?
Do you know if you can get 512mb cards?
Can you get zoom lenses seperately, and fit them on to digital cameras?

I probably will be getting this camera. Optical zoom is really the only thing missing, and it would add a lot on to the price to get a camera with it.

the zoom facility is really useful, but as you can edit the pix anyway ion the pc, you can live without it.

I use Smartmedia cards and i get 256 pix @1024x768 on a 128mb card. 128mb smartcards are about £30 now, can't see anything but the very latest formats being much more expensive than that.

If it's a parallax camera (separate viewfinder) then no you usually can't add lenses on.

I also highly recommend rechargable batteries and a charger, naturally Digicams eat batteries. Also make sure you use a card reader, otherwise you can consume your batts just downloading the pix by USB cable.
