This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

DVD-R/RW vs DVD+R/RW ... and "Stickykeys" (as an a

Between these formats, which do think will rule the market after the next 2 years. I am looking to buy Recordable discs for my DVD-/+ R/RW drive. Panasonic A09 I think it is. I took from my old computer the Creative DVD-Rom drive that can only play - media (or am I wrong).

I'd prefer to use my recorder as just a recorder and my DVD-Rom as a player. But I don't mind using the recorder all the time with the + discs if + is the one to survive, that way I don't ever need to rerecord anything. I currently use my DVD-Rom for game playing and installing, so I don't necessarily need to use my DVD media on it, it gets used a lot as it is.

I just don't want to sink my money or time into something that I can't view ever again if for instance one of my drives broke and the format is no longer supported.

So which is the future? And what is the real difference between them, aside from recording information differently?

Also, I have this XP Pro question for anyone who can answer it. What the hell are "Stickykeys?" I sometimes tap my fingers when I think and I apparently tapped the shift bar 5 times and turned on StickyKeys. What is the point? Purpose? Use? Reason for being? The silly thing opens with a dainty little squeak!

DVD-ROMs can only read DVDs, not write to them. As for DVD_/-RW, - and + are pretty much the same, and are simply just different ways of recording. DVD-RAM can be used like a removable HDD, but is pretty much the same too. As for the future, blue-laser DVDs are already being produced, and they use a shorter wavelength laser to fit more data on an ordinary DVD. At the moment, they are the future (get it? ). Unfortunately, you will not be able to use "blue DVDs" on normal DVD drives. However, NEC has released a blue and red laser DVD player, which should come in handy during the transition. If you want some links old son, I'll see if I can dig some up for you.

As for your other question, "Stickykeys" are designed to make shortcuts using SHIFT,CTRL, and ALT. It's really irritating. To stop it from coming up when you press SHIFT five times, press SHIFT five times (trust me, I'm going somewhere with this), and click on "Settings", and then click on the "Settings" button under the "Stickykeys" area. Then remove the tick from the "Shortcut" option, and that's it.

I couldn't have put it better myself. I always disable stickykeys, it's another pointless piece of cr*p that gets shoved into an otherwise sound o/s.

Eeek! I frickin hate sticky keys, whoever came up with it should be shot, encased in concrete and buried below a 30 story building. The shortcut always manages to bring up the properties at the precise moment you don't want them to.

Anyway back onto the blue laser DVD, i'll be very suprised if they make a quick takeoff, if they make a takeoff at all. The red laser DVD set-top box is so prevalent in almost every first world household that compatibility issues will not go down at all well with the average consumer. I'm thinking that they'll have to produce dual red/blue DVD's for a long time before a complete change over. Though I wouldn't be entirely suprised if the blue laser DVD went the way of the BETA.

*Bows* That's high praise, old son!

Mustang - Yes, in terms of the comsumer market; eg. movie DVDs, it will take a long time to become the standard, as everyone has huge collections of red laser DVDs and will not wish to update. The blue laser DVD is, in my view, more for the computer market, as they will be far more effective in allowing people to make backups of important data.

No idea about the DVDs, i thought they were all the same!

But stickykeys is the most annoying peice of usesell cr*p. The people that the software is aimed at dont use computers!

And it annoying in some games i play, like half life, where i have "use" mapped to the right shift keay

'shift' come with me
'shift' why wont u mve?
'shift' stay here then
'shift' try again
'shift' please move!

CRASH!!!

Yeah well, you had it coming Arania . That's precisely why we disable it; to avoid CTDs.

@Esq

DVD-ROMs can only read DVDs, not write to them.
I'm not stupid, just ignorant.

But if I record - (minus) I can play it on my DVD-Rom whereas if I record + (plus), I cannot? It is an older Creative PC-DVD Blaster 16x from about a year ago. Just prior to all the +/- debate. Again I have a separate writer drive, I just don't like wearing out a good device on merely reading information when a less expensive Rom can do it instead.

Is it true + has a faster seek time? How big a difference is it?

I turned off Stickykeys, that little squeak was almost alluring, I'm glad to not have access to it anymore. That way I'm not compelled to hear it squeak to me!

@Stinger, like I said, that squeak sound I get when I did it was somewhat enticing, I kept purposely hitting it afterward. So I understand a fascination, but it was best for my sanity to turn it off.

@Wolfy, you really need to direct your posts at the person you're talking to, I thought you were talking to me.

Your little side comments crack me up Wolfy. They are so hilariously pointless.
