I''m Running Privateer in XP!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

I''m Running Privateer in XP!

Just thought that I'd share with anyone interested

Actually, I'm using a DOS emulator called DOSBox: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

Reading the readme file is necessary, but I have some pointers. First, the directory selected as the 'root' should be one level below your privateer directory. The dosbox.conf file needs to be modified to get Privateer to work right. Set the line 'ems=true' to 'ems=false'. With the EMS disabled, Privateer runs fine on my PC. I get sound, and can use the joystick ok (it seems to have a really big deadzone to me). I recommend turning off as many other programs as you can manage; it runs more smoothly. With a 2.06 GHZ Athlon, I have it running at 7000 cycles with nary a hiccup. WARNING occasionally I have a crash back to windows, apparently during animations/cinematics. I have saved and loaded to a fare thee well, and it works fine. Save often.

I have not had much success with DOSBox. I mean, even after using VDMSound and mouting the game folder, not all games work for me. It's not a bad program, but I'm waiting for a better alternative. "FreeDOS" is supposed to quite good though.

By the way, you can find DOSBox and VDMSound (sound card emulator) at SourceForge if you want it. I'd post a link, but I'm feelin' lazy.

This is the second way I've seen to get Privateer to work in WinXp. I never tried the other, but as it uses 2 programs (one for DOS one for sound) I haven't been willing to try it, but this sounds neat. This along with the coming Privateer/Wing Commander total conversion mod this has been a good month for Privateer!

There's a Privateer/WC total conversion mod? <faints>

<gets back up again> jeez it's like Christmas! i've really got to check out other forums, i didn't even know until sS posted that. Thx sS!

just time then to finish call of Duty and then get back to the real world... Wing Commander style, my Centurion, and the Kilrathi border in the Gemini Sector. If it's multiplayer then I aint never going to leave!

@Taw, no sooner than I just post good news, I have to report bad. One of the main modders of the Privateer mod has blown a battery in his laptop which took out his HD. He did have backups, so no worries there, but he's got some techical difficulties to deal with right now. He just posted that annoucement on the thread I linked.

Slightly off-topic, but can anyone gove me some tips on how to get Wing Commander III to run through WinXP? Every time I start the game, it locks up before it even loads, and I have to ALT-TAB back to Windows and exit it manually. I have tried VDMS, DOSBox, the Crius.net forums, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

I also have a "Application Error.... Cannot read from Memory" Error when I try to fly in Privateer 2. The Cruis.net forums weren't much help their either. I used all of those fan-made patches and burnt a new CD but to no avail.
