I''m Running Privateer in XP!

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

@Esq

Slightly off-topic, but can anyone gove me some tips on how to get Wing Commander III to run through WinXP? Every time I start the game, it locks up before it even loads, and I have to ALT-TAB back to Windows and exit it manually. I have tried VDMS, DOSBox, the Crius.net forums, but nothing works. Any suggestions?

I also have a "Application Error.... Cannot read from Memory" Error when I try to fly in Privateer 2. The Cruis.net forums weren't much help their either. I used all of those fan-made patches and burnt a new CD but to no avail.

I haven't installed either of those games yet on my new XPPro system, but I did install another older game that didn't work correctly. I found a really cool feature in XP Pro (maybe also in Home) whereby clicking properties on a shortcut icon to the game can give you the option to emulate older versions of Windows. It worked for this game! If you can't play WCIII on XP, then maybe you can play WCIII on XP emulating Win98 or 95, because I was able to play WCIII on 98 with no difficulty.

Also, don't forget, that you may need to add the -svga after wc3.exe, because that may keep you from playing under windows without it. I think you can also add -i after that for interlaced video, I can't remember if that was WC3 or 4.

Privateer 2 is a tricky game for some reason on all the systems I've ever owned. I've had to really learn to tweak and fiddle with the game and systems to get that one to work in DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95 & Windows 98. When I get around to installing it, I'll let you know if I came up with anything. But for now, try the emulation trick. Maybe it will work. And let me know if it worked.

@Taw, seriously you should give Warzog an email and offer your services, tell him Sir Spectre sent you, I was the one that got him started on the whole thing! He found one of my notices about Bob McDob stopping his work and decided to pick it up himself. Thus giving Bob encouragement to come back.

you're talking about compatibility mode, which won't work for wc3, because it ran in a DOS-window (or you could play it in native DOS) also being a DOS app it will never run on anything but a FAT/FAT32 partitioned hdd. Compatibity mode can be very useful for 95/98/Me and NT/2K apps that are hving dificulty in XP, but wc3? never. You have to work some other voodoo to get that to work. Privateer, because of the way it handles protected-mode memory with JEMM, is even more difficult. You remember how very specific it's configuration requirements were even for a DOS bootdisk?

System Shock 2: If you get one of the later releases of SS2 (in the gold EA Classics box or whatever), it should run fine on XP.

Privateer: I've also recently gotten Privateer running on my computer! DOSBox has been going through periodic updates which have brought it closer and closer to actually being able to run the damn thing. It's an excellent program, and you definitely don't need any additional sound card emulators. I use it for all DOS games aside from anything that can be run with SCUMMVM.

My only problem is that Privateer's flight engine runs INCREDIBLY SLOWLY, no matter how many CPU cycles I set, and I run a 1.8GHz mobile P4 with 512MB RAM. This isn't too bad for me, as I'm more interested in seeing all the planets/base locations than I am in actually flying, and PREDIT lets me bypass the flight engine just fine.

I don't understand what you're talking about.

Thanks SS, but I've tried all of that. The Win95 patch for WC4 works perfectly, but WC3 won't work for me. I'm downloading the WC:Saga version, and hopefully that will work. If I could only figure out how to patch the movies in...

System Shock 2 worked fine when I tried it out under XP a few months ago. You should need any emulation at all.

I've actually just downloaded Privateer and RF. Hopefully, they will work out well.

you're downloading Kilrathi Saga? I'm horrified.

Post Sun Feb 22, 2004 4:49 pm

Why is that, old man? Because I am downloading abandonware? What's wrong with that? It's perfectly moral!

Post Sun Feb 22, 2004 4:53 pm

but it's KS; you should have a proper copy to cherish and wrap up and never bring out and def never play cos that might scratch the disk. I keep all my beautiful WC series safely tucked away so they can never be spoilt. I even have the original fd's for WC1 with the guarantee cards and mint box and everything.

Post Sun Feb 22, 2004 5:19 pm

Don't blame me! I'm not that one who lost the CDs! Damn siblings *grumble*. I had a copy of Privateer and RF once too. Life's hard .

I have so many of the Origin System games I even have 3DO, MAC, Playstation, and SNES versions. It's a sickness, I know.
