PC problem..again(has been fixed

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

You don't have an MS Office CD? Then you may have problems getting Outlook and Word, etc. Are they all the programs that you will need?

Stinger - Bah! Outlook and Outlook Express are practically the same; they're both buggy, easy to exploit, and a bad idea to have on your system. Mmm, kind of like Windows .

Post Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:10 pm

Maybe, but as i checked XP Home CD Outlook is there, but dont know for word, so that is the problem

lol, if I new MS Works will be reinstalled, I would have already done the system reinstall...but if its not, well I am screwed.

hmm, just found this . When you want to reinstall MS Works (from "Undo harmful or unintended changes to your system" in Help Center), MS Works is unziped from:
D:\CPQDRV\211894\00A\005
So if I save this on a disk, I should be able to reinstall it, right?

Perhaps be sure to sve neceesary reg keys this is assuming your reg is the problem

Demouser: I have no wish to join the play, but rather to see it enacted. My only concern is to avoid having the lands of Microsoftia bare down on myself.

Spammers: have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_failure.wav playing back in ther head when they visit TLR

Mods have C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\DATA\AUDIO\MUSIC\music_victory.wav playing in their heads every time they remove Spammers

I do not believe that registration should be a problem. I never was asked to register none of the programs that came with PC. As I read on Norton CD:
NOT FOR RETAIL
NOT FOR RE-SALE
For distribution only with new pc

So I guess all programs are "special", they were programed to be avaiable at start (no registration needed) ...well at least I hope

Esquilax, you are sorely mistaken my good friend. The differences between Outlook and Outlook Express are like night and day. Please, I can appreciate someone saying something based on their own experiences BUT when it's so horribly wrong, I am compelled to set the record straight.

Case in point, does anyone know what an Outlook form is and what it can do? (Taw, be quiet.). You won't find anything even close to that in Express. Here's a hint, it's a template that every single person uses when the use Outlook. Secondary question...what is a "one-off" form...anyone? Also, the security behind Outlook makes Outlook Express look like a hole the size of Texas. Outlook used in conjunction with an Exchange server is a piece of fine art in the hands of an Exchange administrator that knows what they are doing.

leonhart, I'm quite positive that if you were to have the time, experience, and dedication you could fix that computer of yours with some serious concentrated troubleshooting. But to be honest...you're not yet ready to delve into that world. No offense intended at all, I'm just being realistic from reading all your posts. It's certainly not from a lack of being able to listen and learn, trust me on that one. If a thrid of my customers were as patient as you I'd be living a much less stressful life.

That Win XP disk doesn't have Outlook on it. It's most likely the Outlook Express version that comes with every XP install since Internet Explorer 6.0 is part of that load. Bottom line, you'll have at least one email client on a reinstall.

Have you considered repairing instead of reformatting and reinstalling XP? If that recovery CD is what I think it is, I'd opt for that first and see where it leads you. Some of those recovery CD's do quite nicely to recreate "out-of-the=box" status.

Keep us informed, someone might learn something.

I use Outlook, I think it's fine, I have no problem with it as an e-mail client at all. lots of functionality and some very advanced features. I even use it in preference to Opera, as regards e-mail.

However, Outlook Express is a p.o.s. and riddled with security holes.

Does this mean I still need to back up all the important stuff? The way you said it I would say no, right?

Post Wed Feb 18, 2004 7:11 am

you need to backup everything thats yours, docs, pics, sounds, movies, savegames, downloaded programs, mods etc etc i.e. everything that you've put on since you got the machine. A cd should be fine.

Stinger - I have worked with Outlook on more than one occasion, and I have also been taught how to administrate Exchange (It's good, but not as good as Groupwise), so I am not completely uninformed . In regard to your questions I'm pretty rusty, but as I recall, an Outlook form is a electronic version of a physcial form, such as a questionnaire, etc. The window that appears is a custom interface or template that is designed to allow users to create online forms. As for a "one-off" form, are you referring to forms that link to various aspects of Outlook and do not save data definitions?

Outlook is getting better, but I have been working with people who seem to end up trashing their machines by using Outlook. Actually, now that I think about it, they may have been using Express, not the standard version. Because of this, I will retract my previous statement until I can confirm my suspicions as to the security of Outlook.

Post Wed Feb 18, 2004 1:39 pm

what's that database behind Outlook, is it Paradox? or is that Express? I don't remember and I can't be *rsed to look it up.

Post Wed Feb 18, 2004 2:07 pm

Well all my files have been backed up (took some time, but oh well). All that is left is to get my sis back hers up and than its time for reinstall. So if ya guys dont hear from me in couple days ya will I know I screwed up

As for Oulook...

Well to me it seems very secure. I had my email on it for at least a year now, and I have never had any problems with it. No spoof emails, no nothing. Well except the problem i am having right now, but today I went and and tried to check my emails, and oulook Worked , dont ask how but it just came to life again . Anyway, if you ask me Oulook Express is very good, easy to use and provides some interesting things.

A VERY basic Outlook form is simply a blank email message. You can use Outlook forms to do an extensive amount of other things. You can use Visual Basic or SQL to insert drop-down fields, simple text fields, combo and list fields. Sky's the limit and everything is customizable. If you've ever played with Access and the forms you'll get an idea what is capable with an Outlook form. Hell you can even link to a database or an Excel spreadsheet with a form (not to mention a global address book). Actually, playing around with Outlook forms is fairly kewl once you get the basics down. My favorite tweek is inserting fake warning pop-ups that are initiated when unsuspecting users do certain things and are prompted to perform very specific actions. Sort of like "forced training." Yup, Outlook contains so much more than OE ever will.

A one-off form is one that is essentially a broken form that utilizes client side macros only and can not be published to an organization level that would allow it to be viewable by everyone. The Macros is a key element is explaining how secure Outlook really is. Now Outlook 2000 is not perfect, but later versions each got tighter and tigher on the security holes.

Outlook Express is for the general public. Outlook is for the savvy. Outlook Express can be viewed as "Outlook Lite" if you will

So what's my score Stinger? Did I pass?

Good luck, Leon. Remember; plan it first!

Post Wed Feb 18, 2004 4:48 pm

Outlook "sh*te", not "lite" i migrated all our people onto Outlook yonks ago and go mental if I catch them using Express.
