PC problem..again(has been fixed

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

@Leonheart, depending on which version of windows you have, XP for example, in that area of the bar I have a < in a circle that opens to the icons I have hidden. My norton stays hidden and others too. Saves clutter. If you have an older version, you can add it to the task bar or add a quick launch one.

Yes I know that, but its not there...it appears I log in but than it just disappears, even when I press <. If I want to run Norton from Start it does not open, or if it does it closes right away...or freezes. The weird thing is that firewall and everything works but I can not open them to change settings and stuff...

Reinstall them and you can change the settings to what you want, like any user changing it ect.

re-installing norton is very nasty buisness
i tried once, it was a fiasco, the moment i
installed it back, i got 5-6 e-mails from
symantec, saying that i have used an illegal
copy of norton and that i must uninstall it
immediatly, jeeze...
thank god i dont ever have to go through
that again, (£2000 insurance)

Re-installation is the way to go. It fixes 95% of software problems. If you have any further problems, then let us know. One thing; there are reports of trojans that disable AV Scanners and firewalls, etc. It may be worth doing a precautionary trojan scan; just in case.

lol, I reinstalled it right now....but still having the same problem, anyway here is step by step to what has happened:

1. Last night both Anti Virus and internet Security disappeared from bottom right
2. I thought it was just a small problem so I restarted my PC
3. Still both did not show in bottom right (not there even after pressing < )
4. Tried accessing Anti Virus from start menu, it starts than it suddenly closes for no reason
5. Started internet security, it says its disabled, tried to enable it, says account needs to be a supervisor account (which is weird as my account is main and it is a supervisor)
6. Reinstalled the first time, than internet did not work, uninstalled Anti Virus, internet works
7. Tried to register NAV, registration failed
8. Uninstalled both NAV and NIS, reinstalled them. internet works, but now cant check my email using outlook express, there is an error for email scanning in NAV
9. Tried to download virus update, could not do it
10. When ever start NAV or NIS, they open than close 3-5 second later, both are still not showing in the lower right
11. checking windows task manager, and it shows both NAV and NIS running (shows them under processes)
12. Still cant change none of the settings as I need supervisor account (which is the one I am logged in right now...weird)

Well that’s most of the things that have been happening today and last night, any body know an possible solution? I am not sure, but could all this happen if I have been hacked or something?

BTW, if you are wondering:

NIS-Norton internet security
NAV- Norton anti virus

EDIT
As for trojan horses, I did a scan last night (on norton website) and it turned out fine, I might run couple more tests, on PCpitstop.com and norton...just to make sure

Try AVG anti-virus it is free. I personly don't use one but avg doesn't go crazy about activation

Which services do you have running? Check under "Administrative Tools" as you may not have the required service(s) running, and that is why the applications are quitting. All of the services that have to do with Norton should be set to "Automatic" and should probably be started.

I think you've got something like Blaster or Welchia which is disabling your AV and the updates. using Live Update, right? that's what it does. try downloading the Blaster/welchia removal tools from Symantec, running them, getting the security fix from MS (the tools take you there) then reboot and hey presto! your AV should kick back into life again

your email error is caused by the remnants of the proxy settings Norton puts in. if you go to your email clients account settings and into servers, you'll see it has pop3.norton.antivirus or summat like that, delete that and put your settings from your ISP in, and it'll work fine, I promise.

Well its not one of those viruses, ran both tools and came up clean (I was hopping this will fix the problem). Anyway, as for email I use settings of ISP provider (no norton stuff anywhere), so dont know what else could be the problem for email errors..

God I do not know what else to do....tried everything that came to my mind, and its always the same...

Leonhart, when you do the reinstall, before you do, go into my computer/programs and delete the Symantec folder, then reinstall. It helped me in the past.

Norton stuff uses a common client (ccapp) which sometimes has problems on some systems, its also memory demanding. if youve been reinstalling Norton its quite possible that this has become corrupted. Properly uninstall and then use Windoctor or RFA or summat like that to tidy up the loose registry strings, delete the extraneous folders, restart and re-install. You are using legit copies and not warez cr*p, aren't you?

Post Sun Feb 15, 2004 4:52 pm

Yup, its legal copy came with PC when I bought it , anyway to uninstal I need to log in as Supervisor. Here is what it says when I try to uninstal:

A Norton Internet Security account with upervisor access must be logged in to uninstall this product. If norton Internet is not currently running, please run it from the Start menu and log in.

Ok, it says maybe I need to run it from Start, which I do and as it openes after couple seconds it closes by its self, and when I check Services in Administrative Tools it shows NAV and NIS running...but here it says I need to open it. Well I guess i will have to finish this tomorow, do the uninstall (somehow), delete any folders left and install everything again, hopping it wil solve this problem...

You can also boot into safe mode and uninstall programs sometimes when it won't let you other wise. Are you the superviser/administrater for your computer? That helps more if you are and any other people have seperate accounts.
