leonhart you still have not mentioned your operating system yet.

Do a system restore (how depends on the OS I'm afraid), defrag, then come back and tell us some more details. When did this first start happening, does anyone else use this system, any other "utilities" you have installed on that system? I get the gut feeling you're leaving some info out that might help troubleshoot this.

The defrag might help on a reinstall of the AV software.

@Aod, your story is incredible. Better you than me bud.

Sting's idea of a system restore is a good one, providing your running XP. If your running ME however a system restore is likely to do more harm than good.

tidy up the loose registry strings

Is probably the best piece of advice, get rid of ALL l remnants of NAV and NIS. I'd say the previous installation is corrupting the fresh install.

@Stinger
I got XP home edition

Last thing I installed was Escape Velocity NOVA (at least that I know of), which was last month, also as I stated above, it all happened last night...possibly exactly 24 hours ago . Now that I do think about it...I did disable firewall for couple seconds, think that got something to do with it? I did not write it before as I did not see any harm being able to happen if you disable firewall for couple seconds...(as far as I remember Wolfy had no firewall, and he was....ok ). As for other users, its only me and my sister, and she logs in once every month , and mostly when I am in school. So last time she could have used the PC was 2 days ago...so only harm could have come from me

I did defrag last night, nothing happened (except PC seems a lot faster ), so that could not be the deal. I also tried the system restore, but it was turned off :O, I think I left it off last time I had a virus (like 2 months ago) virus removal instructions sayd I had to turn it off, but I do not know if I turned it on...god I am so confused.

Suggestions:

1. Invoke a system restore point to a week ago at least. "How to"
2. After doing the restore point, uninstall any virus software.
3. Do a defrag (yes again)
4. REBOOT your machine (I don't care if Win XP doesn't need rebooting to fix things anymore...I'm from the old school, just do it.)
5. Do a fresh install of your virus software and update the definitions immedietly.

Report back here with results.

Do you have any idea how many corrupt packets can be slammed thru a port on your PC in a couple of seconds?

Post Sun Feb 15, 2004 10:42 pm

I would say not

Anyway, I do not have a restore point from a week ago, last one is from last night, I turned system restore back on, as it was off. I turned it back on after the problem, and i do not think that is is possible to create an restore point on settings from week ago

Check This link.

I can uninstal NAV, but NIS is the problem, I need to be supervisor in order to uninstall. All accounts on my PC are Supervisors, and none of them can uninstal NIS

Okay, now we're getting somewhere.

see This link first Then this one . Be aware of the warnings posted.

More stuff to read. See here then Here

Fascinating stuff...I'm learning at the same time here leonhart.

Post Mon Feb 16, 2004 11:41 am

Well I uninstalled both, than reinstalled. On first restart they kind of worked (still get closed after couple seconds, but i could change settings and options). On second restart same problem again. I read on one of the links that there might be a conflict with some other programs starting as you turn PC on. So I will reinstall again and put turning of NIS and NAV to manual, hopefully this will fix it.

BTW I got NIS and NAV 2002

EDIT Well that did not work

Check to see which account is the "Administrator". Go to Control Panel - User Accounts, and check the name of the "Computer Administrator". Then log in as that user. Perhaps you should consider a complete reinstallation. It ffixes 95% of problems.

Post Mon Feb 16, 2004 5:45 pm

All accounts are administrators/supervisors, and i reinstaled both NIS and NAV..and still the same thing

Post Mon Feb 16, 2004 6:17 pm

Did you clear out the NAV registry entries and any erroneous files after uninstallation? NAV has a habit of leaving a healthy amount of itself behind after uninstall. One of my pet hates with the product. You might want to also check that Live Update was un-installed, sometimes it likes to keep itself seperate from the rest of NAV.

If all else fails you can always format your C: drive an reinstall your OS. It's a sure fire way to get yourself a nice clean registry and file structure. Hope you've got your hard drive partitioned though or at least all your file goodliness backed up.

One thing you can try before formating, do a search for symantec, and in the details of the search, click on include hidden files, that way you can get them all.
