Windows NT/2000 Source Code Leaked
This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Well, the commentaries I've read have been rather bemused in tone of voice. On the one hand, MS has been trying to assure its user-base that the security problems that they have been dealing with of late are manageable and that they are not going to die the "death of a thousand cuts."
On the other hand, MS's more security minded user-base, i.e., the governments, are looking at this latest turn of events as another reason to re-think their IT and OS choice strategies in as much as MS has stressed that proprietary code is more secure (obviously cannot say more stable) than open source. Now it doesn't look quite so convincing an argument.

Excellent. Linux here we come! No, I think that the security of Longhorn will be a vital factor in the future, because it is being touted as the solution for all users; completely secure and user friendly. If it fails (like ME), then Linux might win a huge market share and thus, spell the end of MS's monopoly.
But is an OS as we know it today, a viable vehicle for the future in computers?
Seems to me much of what OSes do now could easily be built into the PC device components themselves. Chipsets are now much more flash programmable than before and provide far more tweak-ability than before.
Or, coming from the other end. Java originally seemed to hold much promise in being a complete cross-OS-platform solution until MS got a hold of it and tried to make more of a MS based proprietary flavor out of it.
@Esq.... et tu Esquilax . ME has not failed me.... yet. So far, I've weathered the virus/worm storms better than if I'd had XP

ME better than XP? I hope not or MS is going backwards.

Indy - Use latin on me will you?!? Semper fi . Take that!
Look, I like ME. I used it for two years, and it started up and shutdown very quickly, and everything ran on it. The problem was that system restore trashed my machine on one occasion, the registry became corrupted for no apparent reason, and there were random freezings and crahes in games which I know to be caused by the OS. The major problem is stability. I used ME successfully for quite a while before switching to XP,a nd my brother uses ME to do his music composition. Still, the fact that ME has been universally condemned by businesses (I still don't know of one business who uses it), IT Professionals (they hate it), as well as MS (this I assume because they have stopped supporting it) prove to me that it is not a terribly effective OS. Still, I like it more than most IT types if that means anything to you. If it works well, don't upgrade, however I for one, will stick with XP. For now. Until games start being made for Linux, THEN I'll give MS the boot!

@Esqy
No. The point is that I have not had those problems with ME. And it is NOT true that ME is unsupported. I still can get download patches from the Windows Update ASP site. Last time around 98 also was still supported.
I'm not trying to proselytize. But I am trying to annoy. Taw, especially.
But what about OSes as we know them. Do they really need to be these gigantic all encompassing service systems like XP or OSX?

I had my first ever experience with ME over the weekend (relatives laptop) which resulted in an 8 hour torture test that resulted in me fdisking and formating the whole lot in frustration. The fact of the matter is that Me will fall over with very little provication, in this instance removing a printer and answering yes to delete .dll's that were supposedly no longer in use (by by ME, hello blue screen). So you would think a system restore should do the trick, however the system restore got itself stuck in a continuous loop (when it actually did find some variations between the restore point (from a month ago) and the current settings). When I did get it back up blue screens were comming in thicker and faster than before. Considering the current install was beyond help I tried installing Me over the top of the current installation in the hope of retrieving at least some files. The install stopped at 68% complaining of un-allocated disk space, it turned out that Me had somehow "lost" 20Mb of space and didn't know what to do with it when it found it. So by this stage I'd had a gut full, I dumped it into DOS, partitioned the disk (for future), reinstalled ME and upgraded it to XP.
So my point is ME can run fine for a while, but when it die's (and all Windows installs will eventually die), there is no choice but to reinstall the whole lot cause recovery isn't really an option with it.

*Helps Indy up from the rocks and dusts him off* Take it easy, old son. There's nothing wrong with using ME, especially if it works perfectly which it does for some people. As I have said, my brother uses his machine in a professional capacity, and he has never had a problem. I would recommend XP, due to its stability and the plethora of programs that are available for it, but that doesn't mean that ME is useless. As for 64-bit computing, I think you'll be waiting a while. Especially since the latest processor from Intel still isn't 64-bit. It will have 64-bit "extensions" but that's about it for now.
