"This is because they blame thew average user for a) not learning from their mistakes, and b) refusing to take precautions."
oh yes indeed. I don't blame the users for the existence of the virus, obviously; but I do blame them for not taking simple preventitive measures. I've had ONE virus infection (Cansu) in 14 years, and it's never happened since. Unf. I see the same lackadaisical its-someone-elses-problem attitude, every day.

[email protected] has e-mailed me several times saying that I create, distribute, and execute viruses, wtf?

I've been getting a few emails from spoofed addy's at the moment (mydoom attached of course), obviously someone on TLR does though. I got one from groms fake "[email protected]" address the other day, quite amusing.

Does Norton slow down the system as much as McAfee? Do they both scan the same way? Or do they have separate procedures. I know one person who has Norton and it always scans outgoing email, which is sort of annoying as it takes extra time. I know what blaze meant by all the pop-ups. But on the other hand, I know its working and updating all the time. Does McAfee automatically update and scan on its own? Is that why it may be slowing down the system?

with both you can set the options to NOT scan outgoing mail (oddly enough in "Options" the last place you'd expect..)
both have heuristics scanners which look for "virus-like" activity.
Norton uses Live Update which is a constant request for updated definitions and engines. Macafee uses a timed download from their ftp site.
Norton is prob easier to navigate around for average users, beginners, thickos etc; Macafee is also easy to use but gives you a bit more control if you're a more advanced user.
scanning network drives and outgoing mail and removable drives on closedown/logoff hammer system resources, as does maximum heuristics & program scanning.

@Taw, thanks. Since I'm sorta my own virus filter, I'll go with the easier Norton, because I really don't know anything about modern anti-virus software, up until now I've relied on my own experience on what not to click/download.
Strangely though, a spyware program actually got installed on my old computer 2 days before I shut it down for good. I love a good irony. But it came from a site that misled me to believe it was something it wasn't and there was no way for me pre-filter it myself, so that is why I am getting these things I have never had before.

Norton was the first to get on board with Windows XP compatability. See here
I use Nortons Internet Security, which I find to be a top notch piece of software. Once you have your firewall in place on what you want going out and coming in, it really looks after itself. Granted the firewall isn't reallt the most secure thing on the planet but it's better than nothing. Either way I couldn't be arsed setting up a smoothwall box just to protect one home PC.
It's certainly my AV of choice, largely because you can set it to automatic and it does pretty much everything for you. I use it at home all the time. At work i chose Macafee becuase of its networking and admisitrative flexibility, so we could deploy and manage it over the n/w. But it handles found infected files in a diffferent way to Norton, requiring some management from us, whereas Norton in my home n/w environment is a lot easier to maintain (it does it itself!)
i also make prodigious use of Norton's AV removal tools, which i find more comprehensive than Macafee's.
by far the BEST AV s'ware ever and sadly missed by all true pros was Doc Solomons along with it's Magic Bullet. it remains the only AV s'ware I ever had 100% confidence in. A joy to use and never ever failed.
