Back to the moon?

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Back to the moon?

Well the announcement has been made that the US are heading back to the moon. Apparently George W. seems to think that this will allow us to "harness the moon's abundant resources to allow manned exploration of more challenging environments."

Apparently, parched moon rocks are now a resource.

Still, if it does go ahead it would be the coolest thing the US has done for a while and what's even better is that it isn't my tax dollars that's paying for it. Yaaay!!

what do you mean "back" to the Moon? thats assuming they even went there in the first place, and you know what i say about assuming - don't assume, it makes an ass out of u and me.

i suppose this is akin to those totally convincing pictures of Mars which coincidentally look just like the Western Australian desert, as in exactly the same.

pah, a bit of space news and everyone goes all weak-kneed. Moon rubbish, like whats the point? feed some poor people with the money instead. Anyway its all a load of baloney, they wont go anyway, its all just a big election con. Absolute rot and a total waste of money. Just cos its not mine or your tax dollars doesnt make it right, does it?

anyway, that's no Moon
it's a space station.

or is it way too big to be a space station?

I see your case of 'whingeing git' is flaring up again Taw.

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:23 pm

actually it's not just whingeing, i really mean it. I find such extravagances deeply offensive considering the absolute poverty so many people in the world have to live in. it's a total disgrace imo. sorry i can't share the enthusiasm and i know almost everyone on TLR will hate me for it but I don't care, i'm right and I know I'm right.

edit - sorry Must I'm not having a go at you or getting political, it's just one of the things that really gets my gander up. I really do have my reasons for thinking the way i do about this. i don't mean to get all agressive but it's just the way I am, i'm afraid i mean i can see the interest and part of me does think it's cool, but the other part of me doesn't. i won't mention it again!

I can see your point of view Taw, I might not agree with it, but this could very easily turn into a political debate. So let's leave it at that.

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:39 pm

Actually I can relate to Taw's opinion. I can't see any real, tangible benefit from extensive space exploration, at least in the immediate future, other than some intellectual and scientific gratification. I fantasize all the time about going warp, I'm a trekkie (sorry, TREKKER) after all. But it's just not the biggest fish to fry at the moment. What we have now is enough: we do need more and better communication satellites, and we should invest on that. That, and of course keeping vigil of planet-killer meteorites sent from Klendathu.

they should have gone there the first time round, cos if theyd have made a base there, we be having this discussion about having a base on mars

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:48 pm

it would be interesting to see Indy's opinion on this but i reckon he's still slumming it in gay bars in San Francisco <sniff> he said it was just me and him.. men

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 3:52 pm

We are always going to have problems with poverty and inequality here on earth, regardless of whether we visit another planet or not. I personally think the moment we stop trying to progress and better ourselves through scientific and intellectual conquest is the moment we doom ourselves to extinction.

I dislike the fact that some live in squaller as much as the next man, but I’m not going to stop and say, "Hey, let's not do anything in the way of progress until every man woman and child on the are properly fed and clothed." We'd never get anywhere, because that's never going to happen.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

do any of you actually know what moon rocks are primarily composed of?
Helium-3! the perfest fusion fuel!
Once we figure safe fusion out, we'll have a practically unlimited source of electrical energy!

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 4:27 pm

helium-3? i thought they were mostly made of basalts i.e. magnesium and iron. where'd you get that from?

Post Wed Jan 14, 2004 4:37 pm

A slide show i had on my computer about space travel. you can have a copy if you want...

No telling what's under the surface....dig deep enough we might find some new elements. Or some naturally occuring ones that we normally have to synthesise.

I am of the "we never landed on the Moon" crowd though, so I'll be happy if we actually go this time.........

As far as the starving folks around the world go.....tough. Steal. Don't whine. Steal. People have no Cojones anymore.......

Good?....Bad?......I'm the guy with the gun.

I think it would be kool to have a presence on the Moon. Just for the fun of it. Who knows what we'll discouver.

I tend to think that there was no landing on the Moon (esp. after I saw the material from the "Conspiracy theory" series), and who can guarantee that it's gonna happen this time? Progress and stuff is, of course, cool, but I'd never trust politicians.
