@taw I know its not even close to being the same but I had a similar experience to your 5 year old moon landing when I was 6/7....(this'll make ya feel old!)....I remember rushing over to my mate's house at 7pm on a hot summer's evening (way past my bed time) and huddling around the tv to watch the first space shuttle launch. It was awesome, again I didn't understand a word of what I was being told but I knew it was a historic event. And then when it finished, I my mate's mum let me watch the first hour of Jaws which was reaaaallly scary at the time

I'm not gonna get into the moralities of space exploration, but think of it this way. Jump back a few hundred years to before we had discovered all of the continents. Ridiculous amounts of money was spent in hundreds of failed expeditions whilst half of the populated world starved to death. They had no idea what was out there....they were looking for the edge of the world!! But what would we be like now if the monarchies of the time had turned around and said "nope...no more expeditions....they're far too expensive, we need to be feeding our peasants"...?

Now before ya all jump down my throat, I'm not saying that its exactly the same, but there are similarities. We have no idea whats out there. The discovery of a new mineral...or even gas...could be life changing for every single person on this planet. We shouldn't neglect the needy to do it, that would be highly wrong, but if someone wants to play around with military funds to produce this money then why the hell not. To me its all about balance.

Yea, I meant to say work. I seriously doubt I'll have the finances to just "live" there Taw.

Considering the last civilian to just fly in space paid a cool 20 million just for that taxi ride.

hmm - probabily "Randy Roger StarCraft" To get the 'folks' in the mood to 'colonise' quicker.....

Am with Stinger - shove me on a shuttle - i'll go work up there. I have been putting my body in training, i cannot simulate zero G, but i figure that sitting on my butt all day would render me with muscle wastage and more, so they will have a 'pre-deterioated' worker up there- just to get on with the job, whilst the rest suffer.

*edit* - if i had the money to be able to spend 20mil and still be comfortable - then i would be at space camp right now, waiting for 'me comrades' to blast me up there for a few days....

no-one will be surprised to learn that when the Space Shuttle was first launched (I was 16 i think) I moaned about that too. and blamed the bad weather on it (cr8p summer that year)

by "live" I meant permanently settle, Rob, including employment. Would you be prepared to emigrate and to live and work on the Moon if you could? NASA or whoever pays for you to be there, you have some job as a crater surveyor or moon buggy pilot or summat? would you do it and Earth be just a place you visit every once in a while to see your friends and relatives? lets say there's a permanent colony on the Moon but its nothing flashy, no fancy stuff like artificial gravity or out, just lunar G and recycled air, and living in biospheres at best.

Don't want to be political, but this whole thing smells like sh*t - just like the first "trip" did. Just my opinion - I might be wrong, time will show.

Due to the minor amounts of gravity, they wouldn't keep you up there for more than about 6 months anyways. Your blood vessels thin out, everything goes 'haywire' in your body - as more blood is pumped to your head (like being in a permanent headstand - feels like eyes would explode), then your muscles waste away, Sure you can work out, but so many muscles.......not all done the usual way of 'working out' either.

I strongly sugest we staighten life on Earth before we try anything like settleing the Moon or Mars.

@Nickless: To what end. We could spend an eternity fixing the world. Humans evolved to hate themselves. Its human nature to want more than we have. Were not gonna be closer to world peace in a hundred years than we are right now. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. People desire power, and theres always gonna be a few guys that ruin it for the rest. If its not religion its money, or land rights, or nationality, or political preference or a million other things which we use to alienate ourselves from other people. I could list hundreds of reasons why we shouldnt do anything. Pick a subject, pick a course of action for ANYTHING and it might be better to wait for a dozen things to happen first. If we keep looking for excuses not to go, we'll not go.

Heres another thought:
America spends umpteen BILLIONS on its military budget each year. It has a special Black Budget section which is like a kitty for any top secret operations or new weapons the country wants to produce. Theres a stupid percentage (someone else will be able to tell you) of how much the US Government pays for military spending each year & because of Bush's 'War on Terrorism' he got an extra few billions added to the budget for that. Why not scale back the US Military? You guys DONT have to have a new war next year, instead why not pay enough to keep up with repairs, wages and replenishment of stock....dont buy anything NEW and spend the rest on NASA? the money's there, i think maybe it should be re-alocated.
