maybe your parents are a bit strapped for cash at the moment. I know i wouldnt get a new pc just because i asked for it. I would be expected to put at least 50% towards it and my dad would still see to it to try and get a lower priced computer in the process. Were not an overly wealty family, my dad has only recently regained employment on a permanent basis but that still didnt stop him from investing what little money he did have into the house and buy some new furniture for the front room. Its their money to spend how they like and its a bit goddamn rude to think they should give you £600 of it just because your friend got it. How about getting a job? maybe they'll go halves in if you really need something that meaty to run office? i dont suppose thats unreasonable.

no you dont understand they aren't strapped for cash because they just bought two new sofas (couches) and cancelled getting a car which cost £1500 on my mothers whim (she just said she wanted a car, so she got one)
but no i need a laptop, not just because my friend got one, but it just so happens that this is the cheapest laptop around, even cheaper than a

As a parent myself, it amazes me how the younger generation feels "entitled" to this or that.

I grew up without a computer AT ALL and I turned out just fine. Sure, times have changed but to sit there and say a computer is "required" is horse dookie. Instead of ranting and raving about the decisions your parents (Adults mind you) make try another avenue. Come up with some research on what's available out there in laptops (Adults LOVE choices).

But I'd back off making grandious statements that your parents are not providing you with your needs. Parenting is a tough frickin' job. There's adult decisions that need to be made in a family and MANY of these decisions are made without 100% disclosure of the family finances. Whatever you've done up til this point hasn't gotten you your laptop. Remember, the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Good luck, but if you've got a roof over your head, food on the table, clothes on your back, and parents in your life to help you when you need it, count your blessings.

Get a job and earn some money!

Sorry, I'm in one of those moods. I would simply outline my position logically, and investigate second-hand options. That way, you could have your parents purchase a laptop for you, but one that is significantly cheaper. Do you have an American equivalent of the "Australian Trading Post"?

keep your Wagga-Wagga boomerang exchange shops to yourself. he wants a laptop not a didjeridoo!

Why not? He could use it to irritate his parents so much that they would buy him a laptop to shut him up!

Listen AoD.

I know it sucks when you don't get what you want, but there are more reasonable ways then just nagging.

You have tried the Argument that you need it for school, if I were you I'd keep that in the back of your head.
Now what you gotta do is convince your folks at a very good way.
Try to find the best Price/quality equation, in other words try to find what you need as cheap as possible but still the best possible quality for that price range.
Try to find several options with differing prices, if you can't get that 2,2 GHz processor for a decent price then take it lower to 1,3 GHz just to name an example.
It will show your folks that you are doing research and that you are as economic as possible, also try to talk with your folks at a very easy pace, if you come barging in they will be "scared" by you and turn your request down no matter what the outcome, also (I don't know your exact age so I'll go out from the fact that you are 17) try to find a job and save as much as possible so you can always say that you are willing to pay a part of it, I think your folks will really like that.
If this doesn't help you then I don't know what.

sorry Loc i'm 13 and i dont have time for a job,
with school and 3-4 hours of H/W afterwards
this as i have said three times is the cheapest new
laptop on the market (as in un-used) it just happens
to have a 2.2Ghz CPU for this good price!
i have spent 4 hours (on the weekend) looking
for cheaper laptops, failing to find one anywhere,
including *666 EVIL, DELL ,EVIL 666*, whose cheapest
is £699.00.
you seem to have got it that i nagged my parents, this
being false, i tried to reason for a while, got shouted at
for nagging and gave up!

as for doing market reasearch, my parents trust me that
if i say that it's the current cheapest they'l know that its
the currant cheapest.

h/w's no dam excuse, what do you do on saturdays? watch cartoons probably. get off yer @## and get a weekend job. when I was a lad... (insert tedious patronising nostalgic ramble) ...and thats how I got my first Spectrum ZX. I worked in a pet shop cleaning the cages out, did painting jobs, cleared out houses, did gardening work, I even helped out in a funeral directors, cos my dad said he wasnt shelling out for my hobbies. I use the same principle with my kids too, works a treat.
