Your University

Not just a thread for current students, but previous and prospective.

Which University are/have/will you at/going to go to/been to?

University of Derby: Information Systems (1998-1999)
What a pathetic place - hated it!!!

University of Central Lancashire, Preston: Management and Business Information Systems (2001-current)
I love it, having great fun.

Any amusing Uni stories to tell?

University of Derby, 1993-1998. Computer Science(93/94), Electronics with Music Technology(94/97), Music Technology with Audio Systems Design(97/98)....and no I didn't flunk, I passed the lot, I just changed my mind a lot

I loved the place and still visit Derby 3 or 4 times a year for "reunions" (p*ss-ups)...but I felt the uni went downhill around 96 when they swapped all of the bars around

gunna study Education in Information Communications Technology at Sunderland University, because I want to teach ICT, funnily enough

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 4:10 am

@Card
I have a Georfie mate who hates Sunderland and anything to do with Sunderland, I'm sure he could persuade to go elsewhere.

@Grom
You enjoy and enjoyed Derby, yipes, I thought that was impossible. It is currently the worst Uni in the UK (Ofiicially). Mind you, an old school friend did Sound Engineering there the same time of me and he did well.

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 4:32 am

it was the third best sound engineering course (music technology with audio systems design/electronics with music technology) in the country.

I loved derby BECAUSE it was the worst in the UK. We were all proud of it. By the time you started in 1998 it had started to take itself seriously and thats why I hated it at the end. If you're the worst and you put your hands up and say "yeah ok, we admit it, we're ****, but we've also got the best ratio of women to men and beer to student in the country" then everyone loved it. By 97/98 the uni honestly thought it had a chance to improve itself....oh dear. I had 5 riotous years in derby uni that I can honestly say were the best years of my life so far. Its a shame you didn't start a few years earlier

lol so u n vektrix could have met? or is my memory playing up again? or is my memory playing up again? or is my memory playing up again?

Sunderland University, ATM, is the only uni in the UK that does Education and ICT combined, but i'm only 16, with 2 years at college and a gap year or two, i'll be 19 or 20 before I start. bloody hell I never thought I'd say that!

City of Birmingham Polytechnic, Industrial Design & Engineering BA
- ditto - , History of Art & Design (Renaissance Architecture) MA

a few years later
Keele University, Classics & Humanities BA 9got a first in that!)
then a one year PGCE in Design & Technology from a fonkenhausen local college (i got paid for it though)

loads of foul and amusing stories to tell of shady goings on and stupidity. Where do you want me to start?

I'm gonna shoot anyone who says, "I went to the University of Life" i hate that, that's what stupid people say to make themselves feel better!

Not OFFICIALLY a University per se, Bolton Institute of Higher Education (2002 - ????) BSc Computer Games Development

MUAHA!

university of life? never heard of that... whats it teach? or.. is it just a metaphor ?

oh and anyone know any astronomy uni's. ?? if i don't end up in nasa by 2010, i'll probably have taken a detour into chemical engineering / super duper physics with numbers and algebra that you guys only begin to experience in your nightmares. (come to think of it.. given an option, i think i'll pass on that) i might think about a short course in photography so i can blow you guys away with supercool pics.. of my front yard i might take up an extremely short gardening and grow flowers in a pattern so it shows a supercool nebula or something.

all in all, after i finish my O-levels, with straight A's... A*'s for physics and chem i'll look into colleges / uni's geared into chemistry and physics but not the mechanics bit.. i hate mechanics... then i'll have set up a path to astronomy.. in my spare time i might look at midget biology.. as in looking for signs of life in my pics. then again i might not since i won't be in any position to wave at them.

@kimk - if you can get to the UK, Keele university has the european space school attached to it. One of my best mates lectures on solar sailing there under Dr. Heinz Wolf.

"the university of life" is a phrase that crops up in conversations with ignorant UK doormen more often than not...there's a lot of prejudice against students from incredibly thick people in this country (or people who got their girlfriends pregnant at 13 and are still resenting "the system". eg. "students? STUDENTS?! I hate bloody students, all they do is scrounge off the tax payers money and lay around drinking all day. I went to the University of Life me. You learn more in a day on the dole than you ever will in 3 years at university. Pah! Bloody Students!"

Oh yes, I've heard that one several times...

I'm going through the application process right now, Imperial College London sent me a letter about an interview this morning. I'm applying to do a MEng in Mechanical Engineering. I'm hoping to go to either Bath or Nottingham university.
Imperial is actually the bottom of the list, its too close to home for one thing, plus I've yet to meet an Imp College student with a sense of fun or adventure, it seems like a college for the nerds who like to study and stay in their dorms all day and night.

it'a an absolutley top Uni though Rec, well recognised as one of the nest, as are Bath and Nottingham, real uni's not overblown Polys like the one I went to with degrees out of a corn-flakes packet

in nearly 20yrs no-one has ever asked me to produce my degree certiificate, i don't even know if I've still got it. what a waste of time and money. i wish i'd stayed in the Navy, i'd have been well up in the ranks now.

Grom and I may have met - but I doubt it, he would have graduated in the July and I would have arrived in Sept. Mind you Grom, I did get very drunk in September and woke up with a hangover in August. I was at Lonsdale Place Halls, which was exactly halfway between Mickleover and Kedleston (two miles each way
I heard that thing about Derby Students drinking more alcohol per head than any other uni in the country. I also heard that something like 1% of ALL the alchol in the UK was consumed within the City of Derby. So i suppose I was proud that I was part of that.

I almost went to Keele to stud Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
I have to got through Bolton on Sunday night

I am also sorry to here that Sunderland is the only place to study that. I have bad memories of Sunderland as my dad had a serious operation at the eye hospital. That and my Geordie (spelled right this time) friend hates Maccams.

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 7:20 am

i got a Maccam flatmate, he doesnt like it when i call him a Geordie, which is about as often as possible

When you say go thru Bolton. Remember not to stop driving. Not even for a second, you hear? I'll be in Bolton from tomorrow guess the holiday is finally over.
