**TUTORIAL** How to Overclock Your Pentium (Never had an Ath

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

**TUTORIAL** How to Overclock Your Pentium (Never had an Ath

Who's overclocked their processor before? Who has theirs overclocked ATM? Mine's a P4 2.4GHz which I've bumped up to 2.7 GHz (150 x 18). I forgot to plug the fan/heatsink back in yesterday and got an error message when detecting my IDE drives that I should check my VCore or something, and it turned out that my processor was running at a hefty 93 degrees centigrade! Jesus Christ! It's now running at 58, and hasn't tripped or owt!

So has anyone on TLR overclocked before, it's well easy! I might post a tute if people want it!

EDIT 1:
Here it is anyway:

DISCLAIMER: Any damage caused by your coherence to this tutorial are in no way linked to the stupidity of the author . Continuing to do this means you accept this, and any problems are of your own stupidity, not mine!

1) When your computer starts up, it will first of all 'count' your MB-RAM, press delete frantically to get into the CMOS/BIOS settings. If you have a password, enter it. If you don't know the password, your screwed, and might as well give up.

2) Go into the Power Settings (or something like that) and look at Memory Frequency (something like that). On Pentium 4 Motherboards (is that politically incorrect ) the core frequency is 18, then that is multiplied by say for example, 100 to give a 1.8GHz, 133 for a 2.4GHz, or 200 for a 3.6GHz.

3) Edit this to set the CPU core, and don't worry, that battered old PC100 RAM won't be affected lol !

4) DO THE MATH! If you have a 2.4 GHz like me, and want to bump it up to a 2.7 GHz (like me), then change the Memory Frequency (or whatever it is) to 150.

N.B. IMPORTANT: Be warned, overclocking too much will result in your CPU 'tripping', namely locking up at loading, etc. This is the sign that your CPU is too highly overclocked, so reduce the Frequency.

Sorry it's a bit vague, but I don't have access to the college CMOS/BIOS here becuse of password protection.

EDIT 2:

I think an Athlon Motherboard is similar, so don't worry!

Ah, the age old debate of Motherboard v.s. Fatherboard - scientists for generations have argued about this. Personally a motherboard sounds more reliable, so in some cases a fatherboard is more applicable

i clock my 2.4 P4 to 2.7 also (150x18) and chuck a bit of extra voltage in for good measure. i also o/c my DDR and my AGP card, by the same % roughly so everythings in step. But I have mega-cooling with a King Copper and a blower, and a TruPower PSU that regulates the voltages, & a software utility that actively checks the h'ware and evens out performance.

no-one should o/c unless they have a good idea what theyre about and accept that they might f*** it all up.

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 4:17 am

i just limit it to about a 10% o/c on most of my athlons though the one with the cheap mobo doesnt like it so its not clocked my p4 is a 2.6 but as its a laptop im not playing with it

I'm running a 2.6Ghz Athlon....do you think I'll notice the difference if I clock it? What would you recommend me clocking it to?

I've got a gig of RAM in that machine so it flies anyway...but if it will go faster I'd like to give it a go...

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 4:41 am

nothing ATM will even get close to straining a 1.8 GHz, never mind a 2.6 GHz. If I were you I'd be better safe than sorry! But I'm not you. BTW, whats with your site?

what planet gromit? I use the domain for different subfolders....eg, planetgromit/gallery etc etc (thats not one of them!)...its a long story and has something to do with me looking for a new job - but my current company hosts this domain. But there is a new version on the way, so watch this space....

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 6:02 am

i wouldn't clock an Athlon grom, they're already o/c'd. They'sa gettin' frightfully hot. if you do, make sure you use lashungs and lashings of compo and get a bloody good cooler and more case fans.

Post Fri Jan 09, 2004 6:09 am

I think I'll take your advice and not do it....I'm happy with it anyway to be honest Thanks for the advice though....

Cool! *drools* Better processor here I come! 1.7 Ghz to 2.0 Ghz.

I'm still working on OC'ing my P4 2.4B. I have had problems due to various factors, but I think that since I have added two 80mm case fans, my RAM should stop overheating; at least, I THINK that's what the problem was. I'll let you know how it turns out.

And now for something completely different...

Ahhhh S**t i cant overclock me CPU
cause my motherboard (MS 6577) will
only work with a HP bios so i cant get another one
and on my bios i cant change any CPU related
settings (and no it isnt a password problem
caus i have the password (go figure))

any sugestions?

I changed my profile cause i was tired of typin in "Angelofdarkness"

Always wanted to know how to do that.

Question: On a P4 chip can you oc beyond 3.6 GHZ?

Post Sat Jan 10, 2004 1:59 am

poor AoD. you're stuck with that I'm afraid, i've come across this a lot with oem boards in HP machines. nothing you can do.

Bob, why would you want to? it's 3.6!
