Classic Gaming

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

lemmings, who could forget dear old lemmings, first computer game i ever played

Can't believe I missed a thread like this.

Instead of getting into what's the oldest game I've ever played, I'll keep it short as possible (really) with some of the best classic games I ever got my greedy little hands on.

In order of early to later:
Space Invaders (no doubt a classic)
Asteroids (no brainer classic)
Donkey Kong (the oldest king of RPG)
Pitfall (special mention)
Pole Position (Waaay too many quarters spent not to be in this list)
Defender (absolutely my all-time favorite. Spent litereally days at a time playing this game in college)
ALL Wing Commander series of games (duh)

wierdest game mestered:
Balloon man - I started playing this game at around 6PM on a Thursday and ran up so many extra cyclists that even after going to bed by 1 AM, it was still alive when I awoke the next morning essentailly running on it's own . I started playing it again before classes and ran up another obscene amount of extra cyclists by 8:45 AM that when I returned at 1 PM it was still going strong. Not bad for one qurteres worth huh? We voted (It was a Fraternity house and we vote on everything including what brand of beer we where all drinking every weekend) to just unplug the game and have a Balloon man party that night.

AoD - All the rest are rubbish? That's short-sighted of you! There are heaps of great classic games that you would have played; eg. Wing Commander. Tell me I'm wrong! *Waits for obligatory "You are wrong! post*.

Stinger - What about Privateer? That was pretty damn good, and very similar to WC.

Esq, Rob (Stinger) is the Privateer god. And there's stacks of Wc/Priv/Elite veterans here, including me. that's why we played FL in the first place.

AoD's only 12 or so, he won't even know what Wing Commander is!

@Esq:
I beleive he was referring to the rest of the SONIC games, not the rest of......all games. I wouldn't know, though.

I see. I sometimes forget that we have youngens around here on this great family site!

What did you all think of Privateer 2? I thought that it was very interesting. The plot was generic, however the gameplay was good, and the movies were a pleasant surprise.

I keep forgetting you're new-ish, it seems like you've been here forever

P2 - buggy as f*** even with the patches and properly configured DOS mode, hell I use to boot the f***er from a floppy cos it the only way I could rescue the PC from the inevitable crashes on approaching Crius.

not a bad game although the Privateer title was totally misleading. No relation to the WC universe, although WCnews and hard-core Wingnuts will try to convince yoiu otherwise. I actually like the fmv for once, largely because it was British and Clive Owen's a dam fine dark anti-hero, and of course there is the lust-bucket Mathilda May. Overall fmv feel is like a late 70s, early 80s Dr. Who, but its familar and fun, and the opening sequence and s'track are top quality in my book. Trading and economy, excellent, could have done with a bit of that dynamism in FL. Impressed with the in-space flight engine, all svga, no acceleration. Didn't like the space combat especially the crappy lasers, and everythings too small, and just like FL missiles are rubbish. not being able to get into pirate bases was a total drag. Did like the convoy approach though, hiring transports and wingmen, but the downside of that was that was the only way to transport goods, you should have had the choice, but it would have been a good inclusion into FL too.

very funny game, tongue-in-cheek and sardonic, some of the news broadcasts and pilot profiles are hilarious, the developers in Manchester must have really been taking the p*ss.

@Stinger

Space Invaders - Hmm.. How dare you bring that up. I lost a whole summer to that game.
Asteroids (no brainer classic) - I agree
Donkey Kong - Hated it hated it hated it, it seemed pointless to me.
Pitfall - I only vaguely remember that!!
Pole Position - OK, you now deserve a medal of honour for that mention, this was a great game, I can't remember if I there was ever a corner.

Some more:
Strykers Run (mad RPG)
Crazee Riders (What fun it was knocking riders off)
Chuckie Egg (The best game.... ever, 3 Birds and 5 peckers)
Elite (Crash into that base )

It must be mentioned........because it is the greatest game that was ever made ever.........

Doom 2

The king/lord/master of FPS I still play Doom 2 occasionally, try and beat time records for levels, play wads, multiplayer, still trying to beat it on nightmare, though I did beat it on ultra-violence with 100%kills items and secrets....crowning moment of my life really.....I am a God of FPS. haven't played one yet that had the same challenge to fun ratio as doom, but I've beaten pretty much every popular FPS on the hardest skill level as well as dominated on multiplayer servers.

hail to the king, baby

Good?....Bad?......I'm the guy with the gun.

While doom and quake were mucking around with pixels and monsters, Valve were working on half life. For the first time it made you feel like you were in the actual game.

Post Sun Jan 11, 2004 1:33 pm

I must agree. Halflife was an AMAZING title. But to be honest with ya it wasnt challenging enough. I beat the hell out of that game within the first week of owning it. still it did have one of the most in depth story lines of any game I've ever played.....something I pointed out in another thread about FL's storyline........you are right a bout quake as well they went the wrong direction with quake 3 turning into a multiplayer only game.....don't get me wrong I LOVE multiplayer FPS but I need a storyline as well. Basically I haven't been challenged with a decent opponent in multiplayer in a LONG time. SP always has skill levels that are at least a little challenging. I may just be bragging here, but I've been called to question on this subject many times......and my actions speak for themselves.....play me in multiplayer and I will destroy you.....thats just the way it is. I've played Halo against 8 people all teamed togather against me, they never had a prayer.

Good?....Bad?......I'm the guy with the gun.

Taw - That's ok. I have just adapted, borg-like to the environment!

Griff - It's because I am a loquacious guy, and I MUST have my say or I'll go crazy! I've got that whole "I say it like it is!" sort of thing going on .

Doom 2 was a bit too linear for me. Duke3D was better, but still a bit crass for my taste.

I don't think that HL can be classified as "classic" especially since it is still on sale, and is still being played by the mainstream. Still, it is one of the best games ever.
