Classic Gaming

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

Classic Gaming

That's right! It's another fascinating thread by me! I know that you've all been hanging out for this . Seriously, is anyone around here interested in Abandonware and "old" games? Do you remember the good old days with EGA graphics and 2D-models? Remember those gold-box SSI classics such as "Pools of Darkness", "Dark Queen of Krynn", and "Champions of Krynn"? What about those eternal Sierra classics such as "Quest for Glory", "Space Quest", and "King's Quest"? I love playing old games, as they take me back to the good old days when gaming was not the faceless Capitalist mosh-pit of competition it is today (not that there's anything wrong with that...). Anyone around here remember them? Taw, I'm looking at you old chum... .

sorry chum, not my bag really.

edit - on the odd occasion i do, it's Duke Nukem 3D, Worms, Pac-Man and some emulator stuff like Galaxian, Defender, Space Invaders, Gorf, Gladius III, and Scramble. but normally the oldest games i play are Quake 1 and WC3 & Prophecy/Privateers 1 & 2. but it's very rare i even bother nowadays. I got Kilrathi Saga purely for collector value, I'll prob never play it.

i've got Call of Duty, dyou think I can be torn away from that? hell man I'm fighting Nazis for Mother Russia!

Nuts! Oh well, I'm sure someone around here is into "nostalgia gaming" as it is called.

I liked Space Quest IV, but I was never able to finish it as my Penitum 90 was too good at the time to play a certain part.

I liked King's Quest V, the only one of the series I liked enough to play all the way through. But once was enough.

However, honestly, except for Privateer and Wing Commander 2 which I'm still trying to win for the first time, I don't play the older games anymore. I don't like the hassel of trying to get them to work on newer systems. Which is why I keep a Pentium 133 for my Privateer and WC2.

Other great old games Monkey Island (Oh, I still play this one from time to time on my newer machines.) Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken & the Alien Mindbenders and Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade. Although newer, I also liked Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis and Sam & Max Hit the Road. In fact I can't wait for the new Sam & Max Freelance Police game coming out Spring 2004.

LucasArts had some great games. They're finally turning my head back to their sights after all these years.

I agree. Those Lucasarts games were great! Anyone remember "Rebel Assault"? That was a classic! I must admit that "Fate of Atlantis" was very good. It captured the spirit of the films, and the three paths allowed for replayability. Quality game.

I have played some of those mentioned games. A bit newer though still old, was Commander Keen, one of my favourites Anyone played that? Which episodes did you like better, first three, or the last three? Aliens ate my babysitter was the best!

Post Thu Jan 08, 2004 10:26 pm

I played Commander Keen, I just don't remember anything about it. Please refresh my memory.

Commander keen was this little kid with a bike helmet and a stun blaster who used to be whisked from his home to save the universe or something.

(each game is a seperate game)

Episodes 1 Invasion of the Vorticons
Game:
1. Marooned on Mars (keen is crashed on mars, go through levels to find parts to repair his care, the aliens have hidden it)
2. forgot (An evil mothership is aiming at earth, gotta kill the computers that are aiming at each major city on earth, or something)
3. Keen must die (He's on the evil home planet, and the aliens have a view to kill. Escape and kill Mortimer McMire [keens foe at school, also coincidentally at the head of the alien invasion)

*insert graphical updtate*

Episode 2 Goodbye Galaxy
4. The Oracle (Aliens have taken members of the Oracle hostage, gotta rescue em)
5. The Armageddon machine (similar to number 2, a big ship trying to kill earth, this time gotta destroy the reactors)
6. Aliens ate my babysitter (aliens got his babysittor and took her hostage to a planet, gotta rescue her. The best levels and most comical)

Classic, classic games

I've played Commander Keen 4 - I'm sure it was 4!!!! I went to an abandonware site not so long ago and was surprised by some of the games there, I downoaded Carnivores 2, Transport Tycoon Deluxe and a load of poor attempts. But if you want genuine classics, go back to BBCB, Commodore and spectrum, who can forget Chuckie Egg???? - certainly not me.

As a freelancer one encounters some strange stuff - in the the end, however, you always remain the strangest thing you are ware of.

I remember commander keen, I use to play it at my mates house when I
was about 7. I also have an old commodore and Quest for Glory lying
around in the garage an I Occasionally unpack it an play it, if I can
get the old thing to work.

God you people make me feel old...when you said classic gaming, I thought you were talking about the likes of....

Tau Ceti
Roland on the Ropes
Jet Set Willy
Manic Miner
After Burner
Commando
Rambo
Renegade
Double Dragon

and of course...Elite.

also...

I love playing old games, as they take me back to the good old days when gaming was not the faceless Capitalist mosh-pit of competition it is today

I've been playing games since about 1979 and I can tell you without a shadow of doubt that it hasn't changed one bit It always was a faceless capatalist mosh-pit...the only difference nowadays is that parents are willing to buy their kids games for christmas etc....back in the early 80s it was the kids who had to save up for themselves. At the time computer games were being classified as "evil" by christian groups for inciting violence in youths. I remember clearly a piece on the six o'clock news about the game "Renegade" (2D Arcade beat em up) being banned from arcades around the country because it showed 2 red pixels coming out of your opponents face when you hit them.

Funny when you look back at it - the graphics have improved but the system's the same....
