Esq, books, movies and TV shows show posibilities. I loved the way Ares was portrayed in Zena/Herculies shows. He could make you laugh sometimes.

Incidently, since this is a mythology thread, I plan to name my destroyers in X2 after various dieties (sp?)... Thor, Odin, Ra, Shiva, Zeus, all that.

I am particularly fascinated by norse mythology, perhaps because I wasn't deluged with it when I was younger.

How can anyone say that made up mythologies are better than our historical ones? Even Tolkien never made such a claim, and he openly based his work upon the myths, legends and sagas he read and studied all his life (how could he not?)

As to Mithra, the slaying of the universal Bull ended the darkness of primordial chaos & allowed the earth to become fertile. of course, Mithraic initiates did NOT take this literally, generally being people of high standing and intelligence brought up in the classical tradition; it was highly symbolic, leading the initiate through levels of understanding to a deeper truth. As all mystery religions including Christianity do the same.

Actually, I was confused by what was going on between Xena and Gaby. Mainly because I didn't follow the series all that closely and the episodes that I did catch
seemed to swing in hugely different directions.

The malevolence that was put into the Ares role in that series seemed rather apt to me though.

I always wondered whether what Tolkien said is true because our cultures have moved on past those mythologies or because what he wrote and when he wrote it sort of pre-ordained that it be understood by all to be fiction.

Indy + Final - Yes, even if "Xena" were Australian, I would dislike the show. I'm not saying that it was a bad show (I haven't seen engough to judge it), but the fact that they have predictable plots coupled with over-acting and scantily-clad women make it trashy. It's similar to the way that Charmed has become. It too, is another show that I have only seen a few episodes of, but the direction that I see it going through television advertisements... it's just an excuse to have three women run around wearing as little as possible. Well, much more could be said, but I'd better get on topic.

I think that Tolkien's mythology, while excellent, cannot compare with historical mythologies. This is because such "real" mythologies are relevant even today. I mean, everyone knows that "Thursday" is actually based upon the Norse "Thor's Day", which shows that even now, mythologies are an important part of our lives. Why is mythology so popular? Perhaps, like religion (for some people anyway), it touches part of us that cannot be touched by anything physically real; ie. something greater than we are. Although I'd like to continue with this thought, but I'll wait until tomorrow, as it is still more than 30C here. Ugh.
