The Perfect Game

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

The Perfect Game

Hi Lancers,
Before I bought Freelancer; which is an extremely good game BTW; I used to play "Earth & Beyound". E&B is very like Freelancer, except it is online-playing-only, which might be a drawback. But the forced online activity created a community-feeling like no other, so there IS definitly something about massive multi-player online RPGs! But this post is not about promoting MMPORPG's, but rather to discuss The Perfect Game.

Freelancer came closs, so closs that I suspect many other player consider this TPG (The Perfect Game). Well, the perfect game would be much like Freelancer and E&B, in that you should be able to a)extract or buy pure raw ore, b)manufacture parts from this ore, and construct devices by these same parts (this is the E&B-part). The drawback of E&B which they avoided on Freelancer was that E&B wasn't "truely" 3-dimensional, and I think Freelancer has gone quite a big step in the direction of "true" 3D.

So, in essence, the perfect game would be a game you can player either as a single-player or multi-player, having "true" 3D environment and a story-plot - like Freelancer, plus the graphics in Freelancer is less cartoon-like vs E&B (more real). Not to forget the control(s), using the mouse is an excellent, I'd say brilliant way to control the ship in freeflight and combat. What I'd like to incorporate into the perfect game would be the ability to do very much what you can do in E&B, extract ore (using an ore-extractor, much like a tractor-beam), make parts, devices from parts. Basically you should in theory be able to build your own custom ship too, fuselag, "wings", engines etc. from various templates. This is done by what you call modding (modifying), and that goes directly into the files the game uses. This should be unecessary, and should be a within-game concept!

I know this might be a pipe-dream, but I hope sincerely that in the near future we will see such a game; an exciting story-line game, single or multi-player, ability to build your own custom ship(s) devices and parts, true 3D, excellent graphics.

As of E&B, I reached lvl 135, was a Terran Trader and managed to cut down travel-time from one 'end' of the galaxy to the other in 40 minutes (warp-speed 4.8K out of 5K)......

PS.This is NOT a letdown about Freelancer, as my 'new' ISP has stupidly insisted on hardware firewall (I used Zonealarm before I changed my ISP), so I can't play online-games When I got the game I was pleasantly surprised. Hope DA will come up with an extension-pack (continuation of the story in other words, I'd like to see the story of Edison Trent continue, hehehe!!) I know I know, DA will NOT come up with an extension of what we've got, but rather come up with a brand new game altogether.

may i suggest x2? no? tough

It is better to aim for the stars and hit the tops of the trees than to aim for nothing and hit it dead on.

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 12:30 am

some very interesting ideas! You should play X2 (sorry, couldn't resist)

But, part of the fun with a non perfect game (NPG) is that you get to ***** and gripe and complain in the forums

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 12:41 am

I know
But even a perfect game would generate spin-offs, like what-if stories (as in Freelancer: Aftermath), what kind of ship you have, lvl of weapon etc. I know there's a rule against 'best kind of ships' on Freelancer forum, mainly because of the spam(?) This isn't restricted to Freelancer-forums either, and would pop up in a thread anyway. Questions like how you build a lvl-9 laser or a lvl-6 shield would be perfect for a forum (FAQ etc.).

ah the perfect game, just like a utopia, flawed somewhere in its nature due to one component, people, we can never agree on what 'perfect' is.

It is better to aim for the stars and hit the tops of the trees than to aim for nothing and hit it dead on.

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 1:29 am

perfect is your own opinion
even if u think it is perfect a first, there will be flaws to later find

which reminds me....have any of u seen i think its called Life Force?

Muwahahahaha!!!
I lost it!!!.....or better yet; did I ever have it?

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 1:31 am

perfect in my opinion will not be what you think is perfect, or the guy down the road, hence my post above yours, it just wouldnt work

It is better to aim for the stars and hit the tops of the trees than to aim for nothing and hit it dead on.

When I first started posting and reading on this site, there were a lot of conversations about what could make for a better Freelancer/Space Sim game. I compiled a list, all the things that get repeated the most, here it is:

A: Ideas MOST everyone agrees with:
A01. More dynamics in market/trade system.
A02. More dynamics in "living universe" (the universe doesn't revolve around you, enemies don't break off engagements to come after you, AI prioritizes)
A03. More, More, More:
__a) commodities
__b) ships
__c) weapons
__d) variable upgrades (ala Privateer 1)
__e) new systems
__f) contraband
__g) possibly new factions as well (Church of Man Retros, anyone?)
A04. More and balanced ship CLASSES with varying speeds.
A05. Scrap shield batteries for recharging shield.
A06. Scrap nanobots for repairbot.
A07. Ability to hire other ships:
__a) wingmen
__b) cargo
__c) escorts
A08. More types of random missions:
__a) cargo run
__b) escort
__c) defend station
__d) smuggle a person
__e) rescues
__f) espionage
__g) undercover
__h) blockade runs
__i) recon
A09. Automatic turret (whether auto or hire a co-pilot)
A10. Realistic random events to increase need for certain goods. (accidents, famines, etc.)
A11. Mouse control has more axis of movement:
__a) rolls right-left
__b) strafe up-down
A12. More ship-to-ship communication with AI:
__a) commands for allies and friendlies
__b) taunts
__c) threats/requests (Drop cargo or else, etc.)
A13. Capital ships should be stronger with more weapons.
A14. Factional area_assaults against other factions (All out war)
A15. Customize a character. (at least for MP)
A16. Customize a ship. (decals, paintjobs)
A17, Ability to buy varying types of maps, scanners and other ship components.
A18. Own multiple ships. (have a garage or pay storage fees)
A19. Adjustable HUD options.
A20. More 3D universe, not limited to just X & Y plane.
A21. More intelligent AI, especially when dealing with ships of different levels and their general agressiveness.
A22. Expand MP # of users limit and increase functionality.
A23. New or expanded plot and new rumours.
A24. More wrecks & hidden treasures (Perhaps random).

-------------

B: Ideas SOME people agree with:
B01. Buy, build or take over properties:
__a) stations
__b) battleships
__c) planets
__d) depots
B02. Option to join a faction's navy for a term or two.
B03. Higher pricing for all ships and accessories.
B04. Distress calls to/from friendly faction or Navy.
B05. Join, in all respects, a faction.
B06. Pilotable battle or capital ships.
B07. Casino or other ways to make use of stations and planets.
B08. Larger scale for planets.
B09. Internal voice chat for MP.
B10. Other characters with mini-storylines, not necessarily to do with main plot.
B11. Ability to add your own journal entries to record information learned in game (Rumours).
B12. A commodity price list for all visited places.
B13. Taxation: income taxes, lane tolls, gate usage fees.
B14. Bounty Board (most wanted list)
B15. Cloaking device (fair and balanced, for MP & SP)
B16. Races or competitions for prizes.
B17. Measurable passage of time & timed missions.
B18. Adjustable energy allocation (shields, engines, guns)
B19. Less eye candy (Space effects, not Juni)
B20. Faster and more types of missiles and countermeasures.
B21. Player ejection with multiple outcomes (slave, hospital, arrested)
B22. Fuel for flight (Either just for turbo or both turbo and regular flight)
B23. Joystick Flight
B24. Add back in Sol system and previous Starlancer elements.
B25. Include elements used in Elite (planet orbits, better level system, etc.)

Wow !! This was a great list you came up with Spectre. Just implementing the A-list would be a huge improvement. The B-list isn't bad either, and to be frank, lots of the things on the list IS indeed part and parcel of E&B (faction, be able to join "Guilds", decals etc.).

ah norse, advertising e&b are we? *click*

LMAO, you seem only too eager advertise X2 ff! And anyway, saying you personally like or recommend a game is not advertisment. Advertisment is "PLAY THIS GAME ITS THE BEST GAME EVER GET IT AT WWW.GAME.COM"

Post Wed Dec 24, 2003 4:07 am

Advertizing E&B? Hmmm, I'm playing Freelancer, and it's a great game for me. The better game would implement parts from the 'other' game, surprisingly for me it was already implemented in Spectre's A and B-list.
