I think someone did, as an ironic joke. Does spam reallyt count as meat? What is it made from?

I spent 2 months living in Primary rainforest in Borneo this summer and the only meat we had was tuna, corned beef or SPAM. Oh the wonderful variation! We were hard pressed not to catch the MANY wild pigs running around (there was a family of about 14!) but it was a conservation area... The best way we found was to slice it very thinly and fry it, maybe with a tiny splash of soy sauce. To us it tasted like bacon!

I'm still of the opinion that it stands for Suspiciously Processed Aged Meat though

I was digging up dinosaur fossils in the Wyoming desert when I had my one and only dish with Spam in it. An ex-Army cook did a great job making a rice caserole with mushroom soup as a base with sauteed spam and onions mixed in. I still make the dish to this very day, but I use hamburger now.

Did you know in Japan, Spam is a delicasy? They can't get enough of it.

I love Spam and have it fried, on fried bread, with HP sauce. It also goes great in home-made meat pies.

Anyway, here in Holland we don't have spam, just ham, in a can, wich is probably spam. (notice the rymes? )

I've heard it stood for shoulder pork and meat, but that's probably wrong. Besides, you don't really want to know what that stuff's made of. I've actually never tried it, but my friends tell me it can be pretty good. Of coarse I don't have the most normal of friends... --- VH16

spam has always seemed to me to be made of mainly fat
though i love spam fritters from the local fish and chip shop (large round slice of spam deep fried in batter, about the size of a quarter pounder ,about as good for your health as standing in the fast lane of the motorway )

@WLB, as long as you cook it, there's nothing wrong with it. The problem I have with it is that it looks like the dog food I give my dog when it comes out of the can. Hey that's not a bad idea. I should give my dog spam some time, see if he likes it.

That would be abusive of your dog, I would say. Not that it is unsanitary or "poisonous" so to speak but there is A LOT of salt in spam. Actually, in all canned meats for human consumption. I haven't checked any pet foods as I don't own a pet but wouldn't all that salt be bad for the dog?

But the salt in SPAM kind of ovewhelms everything else that may be worth a taste in the can, save the lard itself. It is very popular in Hawaii, fried up and served with pineapple. They have these "box lunches" in Hawaii. They are "traditional" very economical laborers meals with gigantic portions of food. Spam with pineapple figures prominently as a choice among many things.

BTW: SPAM, the food, being a truncation of: Hormel's "SPICED HAM" ca. 1937, the winning entry from a contestant who won $100.....is funny, unless salt a spice

I actually like the lard in Spam and I love the salty taste. I give the cat Spam occasionally and she yums it, especially if I put a bit of catnip in it. Spam's yummy I had a can last night on fried bread, and it was gorgeous.
