@Taw

No matter how tasty the olive and pesto bruschetta, every day? Yuck.

For the Thread:

Right now, in the aftermath of Thanksbingeing, for a quick whip up snack I have in my fridge:

1.5 lb. of roast turkey, assorted dark and light meats off the bone.
6 cups of cornbread stuffing with walnuts and mushrooms.
6 cups of creamed mashed potatoes
1 cup of homemade cranberry sauce
2 cups of creamed onions
1.5 cups of candied yams
0.5 lb of Viriginia ham, off the bone.

Alas. No desserts survived.
Oh, and for you, Taw.... have you tried Puglian wines?

1 bottle of Picchierri, a nice little Puglian red with a slightly hefty kick (extra alcohol) -er... not in my fridge

Ever tried (brace yourselves for bad spelling) "shpatleze"? Ok, even if you had you wouldn't know it from that spelling. Pronounced "shpaatlehzah"... german desert wine. Eccelent stuff

My goodness, that looks like a bob3terd post... or maby a wolfy

@Indy, yes, isn't Castelli di Jesi from that neck of the woods? or is that Lacrima Christi? I get their DOCG regions confused I'm afraid, but not the wines themselves (former, light very dry wine, perfect with seafood, latter a very sweet dessert wine) There's also a very very light red from Apulia a lot like bardolino but I can't remember what it's called.

@Bob, it's Spätlese, and it's from the Mosel region. Called what it's called because it's picked from the late (später) harvest. We also get the name Hock for german wines from the same area, from the word "hoch" for high, because those grapes are from the highest part of the south facing vineyards in the Mosel valley. very beautiful place, btw. I lived in Koblenz for a year, before i got married.

@Taw

Hmmm. Castelli di jesi..... I'm not familiar with that one and I am not quite sure but I think it is from a different region of Italy. It's a white?

I've only just started on the Pugliese.... mainly because they are more affordable than the others, at least as sold here in the US. Ummm. Wines from Brindisi are Pugliese. Bari and Taranto too. That's all I know so far.

Lacrima cristi? Isn't that a famous Neapolitan label?

Post Sat Nov 29, 2003 11:34 pm

having thought about it, Castelli di Jesi is from the Abruzzi or the Molisé I think, and Lacrimae Christi is from Reggio-Calabria. Name some Pugliese wines for me and see if fires off any memory neurons (i rarely get any further south than Rome, you see)

Well, the Pichierri for one. It is made with 100% primitivo grapes. And it has a slightly heftier alcoholic content by volume, 16%.

Vallone Graticciaia (sp?)
Cantina Sociale
Cantele

Apart from the P, these are the only ones I've tried and, therefore know. Mind, these wines tend to be fruity/anise-y to the nose, but not sweet so much as aromatic in that way. The extra sugar is allowed to turn into extra alcohol, I think. Something about the age of the grape when it is picked being on the more pickled side of things. They are very dark reds as a consequence I am told.

For me, they are wonderfully affordable Italians. The price of a Barolo, an Amarone or a decent Chianti over here is, for me, prohibitive for anything other than special occasions.

Post Sun Nov 30, 2003 11:57 am

why, how much are they?

for comparison, average Uk imported prices

Barolo, starting at £15 and upwards to £60 (really good ones are expensive)
Amarone (mmmmmm!) starting at £12, up to about £30
Chianti, from about £5 up to about £35

bear in mind that in Italy u'll pay a half or even a third of these prices and u get a better quality for it. When was the last time u had a decent Asti or Valpolicella? the stuff that gets exported is dishwater with anti-freeze in, all the best stuffs kept in Italy and u can't half tell the difference!
