my wife went to see it last night, she said she thought it was rather poor esp. compared to the first one; but she reckons I'll enjoy it for the sfx and set-pieces. no great surprises in the story then, it seems.

yay, some more people who agree that is sux0red

Definitely a good movie, but with such high expectations after the last two movies, it felt like a bit of a let down, especially in terms of the storyline, there were none of the philosophical questions and arguments that pervaded the last 2 movies and kept your head alert, and sometimes a little confused. It really comes across as a straight out action movie (not a bad thing at all). Reeves' acting irritated me as usual, but boy does he know how to do those Kung Fu fight sequences! I don't understand what Chetnik meant by the choreography being all wrong, the final showdown got a little cheesy when they started playing superman a few times too often but otherwise it was feckin' ace!
As for the defence of Zion in the dock area, that was incredible! When the air get thick with sentinels its unbelievably intense.
Overall, great movie, just don't go in expecting the great storyline from the last 2 movies.

I agree with Chetnik. As I said earlier it was like every action movie cliche. Revolutions has an action movie paint-by-numbers approach.

Step 1: How can we top a prequel?
Step 2: What emotional notes haven't we hit?
Step 3: Now that Neo is practically a god, what can we do to limit his abilities?
Step 4: How do you get unimportant characters to appear important?
Step 5: What can technology make up for, where the lead actor's acting falls short?
Step 6: What would be kick-ass, if improbable and how improbably can we get there?
Step 7: At what points is the audience to ahh and ooh? (Usually a ratio of 4 to 1, 4 minutes of "ahhh, how cool," for every one minute of "oooh, how touching."

A great example of Step 7 is Pearl Harbor. For every 20 minutes of action, there's a 5 minute emotional beat at least. It is so formulaic to be appealing to mass audiences. The first Matrix was so original and created a great environment in which to play. But the filmmakers became children who had no one telling them what they couldn't play with so they were boundless, but ended up being formless in any personal or original way. And when the form falls apart, in comes the forumla of how to appeal to a mass audience.

To me, Reloaded was obvious to most that it was not as good. But Revolutions reminds me of Independence Day when it came out. Some people thought that was the coolest movie ever. I didn't like it very much because the story followed the formula. When other big action movies started coming out, my friends realized they were anamoured with the glitz and glamour of special effects, but the movie was crap.

I wouldn't say Revolutions is complete crap, but the glitz and glamour will wear off and if there isn't a good story as a backbone, it will fall apart.

OH FOR CHRISTS SAKE

can people shut the hell up about The Matrix 1. Larry and Andy didnt know whether or not they were gonna get to make their trilogy so they made the matrix with enough closure so that if they COULDNT get the funding, their story would have an apropriate ending. When people mouth off at Revolutions it makes me sick, what the HELL were you expecting for christs sake? Can anyone tell me how they honestly would have ended the series? Can anyone tell me how they would have made these 2 films into something worthy of the first one? I am at a blank really, i mean this universe was created by a couple of geeks who love anime, kung fu, robots, gunfights, special effects etc. Theyre the kinda guys that WE are, they had an idea and they made a world with it, and lets face it, the world kicks ass.

The first film covered the Neb crew and the finding of the One. The second 2 films are about the one finding his destiny and the "ultimate conclusion" where his destiny takes him. When you heard that 250,000 sentinels were going to attack Zion what the hell were you expecting, the sentinels NOT to attack.

And what the hell is this bull**** about choreography? Theres ONE fight...well 2, but one is a gunfight, and aside from the rather lame looking airborne part of the 'Super Brawl' the choreography for THAT fight was spot on.

Some people going into this film with some idea that its going to solve all of lifes answers are horribly misinformed, this film says to them what they should of said in the first one...NO ONE has all the answers, you just have to 'Know Yourself' and do the right thing

i'm goging to see it on sat. night at 11:30om, unfortunately i'll be totally smashed, maybe i'll get the best out of it like that since from what i'm hearing it's not much more than an above average sci-fi action movie anyway.

I frankly would have loved to remark exuberantly about the film, but I can't because it just isn't that great.

There are lots of films I can go on and on about how good they are regardless of some flaws and such. Because they hold up so well over time and have solid entriguing stories.

unfortunatly, all the staff in the cinema i work in, are all of the same opinion, it sux

*INCLUDES SPOILERS*

well, i saw it last night....and its left me in mixed opinion.

There is absolutely no doubting that the enormous amount of FX in this film are so detailed, fresh and exciting that the movie can stand its ground on those alone. The battle for zion was breathtaking (hands up who wants an APU), but the lack of time spent inside of the matrix was frankly quite disappointing.

The script didn't stand up to the other two films either. Lacking in intelligence, it point blank refused to deliver answers to any of the questions that the matrix fans have been asking for years. They seemed to up the cheese-level as well...which annoyed me...do they really think that anyone will watch this movie if they haven't seen the other 2?? There's no need for the level of cheese in that film...for example, the young boy struggles to lift his APU arm and shouts "I BELIEVE NEO" before saving zion. Give me a break! The whole cinema groaned at that line...there really was no need for it.

All in all, the film was good, but not really the fantastic ending I was hoping for. The fight scenes and FX were amazing, certainly don't disappoint, and the only thing stopping Smith from stealing the whole show again were the truly outstanding shots of Monica Bellucci's breasts. Enough to make a grown man cry I dare say.

Can someone answer me this though - I personally was gutted to see that they changed the actress who played the oracle...especially with her involvement in the ending...does anyone know what happened there? It seemed poorly explained why they changed her....was this a conscious decision in the script that was poorly explained/justified, or did something happen to the actress?

Post Fri Nov 07, 2003 12:40 pm

@Gromit
Unfortunately the actress who plays the oracle died between films, I believe it was a heart attack.

I had a feeling it was something like that...thanks for confirming it.

She was a great actress, tragic, she wasn't that old really.

I have yet to see Revolutions, but I´m a huge Matrix fan I´ll tell you that ! (see my sig ), so I´m probably going to love it ! I´m going to see it this weekend I guess.

I loved both movies so far (yes ! that´s right ! BOTH !, so that includes Reloaded yes !). Sure, there were some small parts in Reloaded where I as a true Matrix fan thought o_0, but overall it was a great, stunning movie IMO. The Matrix Series is just a combination of great aspects, like a great script (some might disagree of course, but who cares..), exceptional and often groundbreaking visual effects, cool custumes (oh admit it !) and as a whole, it gave me the experience of a thrillride and basically an overwhelming feeling. I have no doubt in my mind that Revolutions will give me that same overwhelming feeling as I had with the 2 previous Matrix movies... This is all IMHO of course I just think that people nowadays are too spoiled to even see the groundbreaking stuff and it seems that most people can only whine about the shortcomings of a movie, without giving any credit to the movie as a whole.
