So Long to Concorde SST

This is where you can discuss your homework, family, just about anything, make strange sounds and otherwise discuss things which are really not related to the Lancer-series. Yes that means you can discuss other games.

wonder if the engines will fit on my eagle ????

Why don't space shuttles puncture heaven?

Sod that, they should keep one as a heritage aircraft, not slice them open and sell them as trinkets

I think one is goning to kept for Airshows

The problem with that is that airshows are usualy done by/with small organizations (ex: confederate air force in the US) that can barely aford to fly a B-17 around in adition to thier other craft. A Concorde would cost a large fortune for each flight! not to mention storage and such

Nifty! I am a Major now

The Beauty of the Concorde is in Flight, you need to see it Flying

Well,

one is going into the Smithsonian's National Air and Space museum in Washington, DC. But I don't know if it is going in fully intact or just with the showy (visitor friendly) parts.

Awfuly big for the Smithsonian. I hope they do have the whole thing though, I've never seen one (except in pics)

Post Mon Oct 27, 2003 10:05 pm

isn't the Smithsonian huge though, and they have some big planes there anyway? (don't know, haven't been to DC ever!)

Post Tue Oct 28, 2003 1:15 am

Very big. Yes.

The Smithsonian has a number of buildings in downtown DC. The Air and Space Museum is but one. That is a big building but, I don't think big enough to house the whole plane.

Last time I was there, they had a whole plane or two hanging from the ceiling (Spirit of St. Louis, P51 Mustang). They had the front fuselage section of a B-17 setup so that you could walk/crouch through the cockpit and look inside the nose gunners bubble. They also had the belly gunner's bubble up too. Yeesh. What a sucker's job the belly gunner had to have had!

Don't know how they plan to display Concorde. I wonder if they'll also get the Tupelov......

@WLB:

Living somewhat near JFK and having to fly out of there from time to time, I have had the fun of watching 2 take offs (it is really really loud!) and 1 landing and 3 different times taxiing on the runway. At none of those times was I able to see her in nose up configuration.

I think the biggest aircraft there is that one that flew around the world non-stop (don't remember the name) and that with the wingtips cut off.

Also in thier inventory is the wright flyer, an Apolo (or is it gemeni) capsule, asorted X-planes and more. Perhaps we ought to go look at the web site...

The website!

it will be a while yet before i am convinced concorde is dead
while the aircraft remain there is always a chance however remote that someone will resurect them (a certain mr Branson is probably the best hope even at this late stage)

@WLB

Oh yeah. Richard Rutan's Voyager, right?
Found it here

Post Wed Oct 29, 2003 3:34 am

Yeah! Thats it. Been trying to remember the name for 'bout a week now

Yay!

If anyone cares, I just found out that the Concorde that landed at JFK is not destined for the National Air and Space Museum.

I will be at the USS Intrepid .... Now an aviation museum on the Hudson River. It is an Essex class aircraft carrier that served in last 2 years of WW2. Across the pier from the Intrepid are two other retired USNavy vessels, the USS Growler - SSG-577, a missile command center nuclear sub and the USS Edson a Forrest Sherman class destroyer. The latter two vessels were built in the 50's.
