I'm with Kyp on this one...I smoke too much to be alive in 10 years, so I'm not too bothered. Besides, we've always got Bruce Willis...

...better odds on it hitting than winning the lottery. In theory you could go down to the bookies and place a fiver on it hitting...then spend the next ten years digging a bunker next to your local ladbrokes...if it hits but doesn't wipe out the entire world you've made yourself a lot of money....if it doesn't hit you've made yourself a trendy new pad on the high street.

ok note to self !cancel pension policy and drink and smoke the money instead
if enough of us do this the rock will miss due to sods law
the only way to save ourselves it to blow all our money and wreck our health
(well thats going to be my excuse for the next ten years)
as a footnote should be just about enough time for M$ to come up with another good game

Technical vocabulary -

Meteoroid - a physical body of mass (usually rock) in free space, with an independant orbit.

Meteor - the flash or streak of light visible as a meteoroid enters a planet's atmosphere. The term is also used in reference to the glowing meteoroid.

Meteorite - the physical remains of a meteoroid that has undergone planetary entry - i.e. the chunk of rock that hits the ground.

Asteroid - one of a number of objects ranging in size from sub-kilometer to about 1,000 kilometers, most of which lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter; also called "minor planets".

Earth - it's where you at, baby.

Yes, absolutely everything I post, including this, is spam.
Bite me.

How do they do it? My relative in US works in NASA and he tells me that they can predict if something hits earth only few months before, and where few weeks after. Have they got some new technolocical devices that I'm not aware of?

Ps. He told me that last year so I really dunno if they've got something better.

Haha, oh well, most of us won't know what hit us LOL

no need to worry, we'll all move to Mars in a few years, and plant some plants to make some oxygen, live in little bubbles, and build walls to protect us from the ::vicious:: sandstorms...then collect the spice to make us live longer...then start a galactic war...

Other than that, there was one {a decent sized one, like a few football fields (is that something like 300 meters?)big} that passed like 60,000 miles away from Earth a few months ago...or last year or something...and hardly anyone knew about it. No need to worry

Another one.

As far as I know, we have all died over thirty times in just my lifetime. And I'm not counting in the mileniumfreak anouncements here.

But they say the probability of the asteroid hitting Earth is just one in 909,000 and the risk of impact is likely to decrease as they collect more information.

that is a direct quote from the article. The odds are in our favor. God doesnt anyone on this ****ing planet think positivly? I mean **** everyone is a paranoid hypocrite. ****ing stop trying to think and actually think for once.

a near miss could be spectacular !
certainly would have the astronomers and andrex busy for a while !

I also heard that a major big astroid hits the earth once every 65,000,000 years, causing mass extinction. And the last one was, how long ago...? Right

Post Sat Sep 06, 2003 1:10 am

I'd like to see it at night in a near miss.

Post Sat Sep 06, 2003 5:44 am

what if the astroid came close enough to decapitate mount everest?
and did not land on the planet to destroy all life because it was going too fast

May the force be with you, for me, to poop on.

If it comes that close, the Earth's gravity woulda made sure it hit Earth anyway.

Post Sat Sep 06, 2003 10:12 am

It's possible (however highly unlikely) provided it was travelling fast enough. Still it'd have to play havoc with the atmosphere.
